I saw that @ceces-works made an oc based on your alien au and it got me thinking: how would Sun and Moon respond to a y/n with vitiligo marks?

Well at first they might not think much about it at all, purely because Reader is the first human they've ever seen. For all they know that's just how it is. But sooner or later they will see pictures/videos of other human and note that Reader looks different, and ask out of curiosity why that is.

They definitely wouldn't see it as something ugly or strange, because it isn't.

...Actually, and this is my brain Doing The Thing, maybe they've seen something similar to vitiligo before among their own species! I'd say it's totally possible for Nebuterrans to have vitiligo marks. I imagine it would look very pretty on them actually, so maybe they would even see it as something truly special, and the fact that it's also something that exists among humans, as evidenced by Reader, a similarity between two completely different species, would fascinate them to no end.

So I've answered this before but I'm terrible with numbers (hello discalculia my old friend) and also feet and inches will never make sense to me even with a converter.

So I tossed together a quick height chart! The y/n is from my other AU but I draw them all the same anyway.

Oh boy, do I! 👀 And because I'm so happy you asked, I'm gonna share more than a few crumbs!

I have this big species guide in the works, needs a lot of illustrations and if you've been around for a while, you know that I am slow af with art. But I can definitely share the text part of it. Most of it anyway.

So their binomial/scientific name is Celestic Luminaeri (also name of the AU), their common name is Celestial Mer and as mentioned on the first pics I posted, they come in two types: solamer and lunamer. Different breeds if you will but part of the same species. They're known for their vibrant colors and high intelligence. They can mimic sounds, including words and can be taught to communicate with their handlers in captivity.

Solamers are characterized by their large petal-like facial fins. They come in a wide variety of warm colors such as reds, yellows, orange, brown and sometimes pink and purple. Their scales have a slight metallic sheen to them and their fins are iridescent, almost glittery.

They can often be spotted sun bathing

While generally seen as the friendlier of the two species, solarmers are still very territorial; swimming in waters known to contain them is highly discouraged.

Lunamers tend to be most active in the early mornings and late afternoons and evenings, preferring to hide themselves away in the middle of the day. They come in a variety of cool colors such as blue, purple, dark grey/near black, white, sometimes dark green. Their long head fin is what characterizes them at first glance. Like solamers their scales too have a metallic sheen to them, but they also have bioluminescence that they can control at will, creating pulsating patterns at various speeds. It's mostly used for threat displays and to attract mates.

More volatile than the calmer solamer, lunamers are considered extremely dangerous and are known to prey on humans should they get the chance. There have been cases of wild lunamers attacking humans unprovoked so they should be avoided at all costs.

Both types can survive in both fresh and saltwater. They can breathe above water but only for an hour or two due to their weak lungs.

(I have info on their mating habits too since it's part of the guide so if you wanna know about that, let me know).

For now, life cycle stuff!

Newborn mers are known as hatchlings and are plain in color (silvery gray) with stubby arms and no hands, mostly resembling a regular plain ol' fish, but you can tell from the shape of their head fins to which of the two species they belong. Hybrids don't happen, a clutch can contain hatchlings of each species if the parents are also different. They are very helpless at this stage and have a very simple mindset of eat sleep grow, eat sleep grow. For the first 3 weeks or so they live off algae they scrape off of rocks and graze on sea grass under the watchful eyes of their parents, after which they’re introduced to more live food such as mollusks, shellfish and later, actual fish.

Hatchlings grow quickly; at around 2 months they’ve become fully carnivorous and their bodies start to appear more mer-like, but their colors are still dull and unassuming and their fins are simple in shape. At this stage they are known as guppies. Guppies are playful and full of energy, often play-fighting with each other to learn how to fight and hunt. They still fully rely on their parents for food and protection.

At 5 months old they look like proper mer but still retain the dull colors. At this point they’ve learned how to hunt and survive and it’s time to leave the nest; the parents lead their clutch to certain safe spots in the area such as coral reefs, large rock formations or the occasional ship wreck where there are plenty of places to hide and there’s enough to hunt, and leave them there. A lot of mers come to these same spots with their young every year.

Young mers of both types band together in large groups called pods, safety in numbers and all that, and are referred to as podlings. This is when they are at their most social but also most vulnerable and plenty of young mers fall prey to sharks, other predators and occasionally, fishing nets. The podlings help each other survive, hunt together, keep watch together and form close bonds. They grow into their adult colors between 4, 4-and-a-half years of age. While not quite fully grown yet, this is the time for the adolescent mer to leave their pod and go their own way to establish a territory for themselves. They fully mature around 5 years and live solitary lives until they find a mate.

All captive mers are wild caught as they are notoriously difficult to breed in captivity. They are easiest to socialize when they’re still young podlings but it can also be done when they’re adolescents, though that’s more dependent on the mer’s individual personality. It’s very difficult with mature mers due to their aggressive and territorial behavior.

Mers are not endangered but they are threatened; they were hunted mercilessly in the 17th, 18th and 19th century by superstitious sailors until it became illegal in the 20th century which saved them from extinction. They are now a protected species. Their numbers have recovered but still aren’t close to what they used to be. In some countries it’s possible to find mers (usually younger podlings, sometimes adults) on fish markets to be sold as food, but this is generally frowned upon.

Killing mers is illegal unless in self defense. Capturing them is allowed with a permit. Certain activist groups fight to make the capture of mers illegal too, claiming that it’s unethical to keep such highly intelligent creatures in captivity for human entertainment or research.

Attempts to breed them in captivity has thus far been unsuccessful.

(again bases on that DM spin-off) I have a feeling that if Eclipse set guards to follow us around i would NOT be able to shut the fuck up, like, i know they can't understand me, but baby, I'm about to yap about every little thing from my feelings and thoughts on the situation to what i think of their planet and culture and my life back at Earth, they don't know a thing Im saying but they are being forced to stay around me so yes, Im going to fill in the empty gaps that language barrier created for as long as i need to, thank you very much

Hoo boy I can tell I haven't drawn nebuterrans in a while. Still trying to kick this very persistent artblock, figured I'd take this opportunity to design a very quick-n-dirty-basic-definitely-not-final design for the soldiers. The final design will probably be quite different and actually look decent but for now, good enough

With Moon being Moon ... Would he reprimand us for staying up too late and try to, politely, get us to go to bed?

You know what, yeah he would!

We've taken care of him when he needed even though we were all strangers, so in return once he's gotten to know us and learned to trust us, he would try to repay the favor by trying to take care of us in return, including making sure we get enough rest for his liking.

He does it to Sun too, since Sun is known to get really absorbed into his work and forgets to do basic things like sleeping and eating. He'd even do it to Eclipse.
