if you think about it Maki's thing with hiding her talent and having it outed could be a good metaphor for being closeted queer and getting outed.
Maki's hiding a part of herself because she worries it'll endanger her or cause others to hate, fear, and or ostracize her. When there's something that could out her, she guards and hides it. She then gets outed and has to explain herself on a short notice. She then deals with her worries being confirmed until Kaito sees past it into her and befriends her for who she is rather than hating her for an aspect of her. She learns to accept herself for it and allow others to accept her for it
