Page from my personal journal: a review of Camden record store Rhythm Records, from my trip to London, August 1995.

Ah, another review from the glory days of Camden Town as a London record-shopping haven.

My impression of Rhythm Records was decidedly mixed, as matched the record-pricing in this store. Never one to hold back on the snark, I took my potshots at two decidedly uncool-to-me U.S. artists in this brief review from my journal:

Rhythm Records, Camden New CDs (mostly upstairs) and vinyl (down). Spotlight on more well-known indies, but lots of good sale records (David Kilgour LP for £5, newish Slampt comp £4), small selection of mostly new 7″es. Amusing selection of ridiculously overpriced U.S. dreck (Jason & Scorchers, Willie Alexander) that has long since found its way into the 99-cent bin at home. Not a comprehensive selection of indie.

This review makes clear there were two things that I didn’t realize at the time:

1. Some artists (that “dreck”) are simply more popular overseas than at home. Imagine that!

2. The likely reason there weren’t a lot of indie releases, and those they had were very discounted, is that the store wasn’t really catering to customers like me in the first place. So that stuff just sat in the bins until markdown time.

At any rate, I am fairly certain I bought that David Kilgour LP (Sugar Mouth). How could I pass up a bargain like that?

Laurie Levine 'Six Winters' Review

    The resurgence of folk music, in all its derivative forms speaks strongly to where we find ourselves as a society today. Things have fractured, there is anger and disapproval towards governments, class divisions are widening and becoming starker and as a result, a yearning for the rebuilding of community has emerged and I feel this is where, in part, folk music’s growing popularity can be traced to.

As contemporary folk music emerged in the 1950’s in America there was a strong social and political message attached to the genre. In a world still picking up the pieces of World War II we see folk music as the genre that sought answers and solutions. It became so popular that in 1959 folk singer Harry Belafonte’s LP ‘Calypso’ was the first album to ever sell a million copies.

Today we see acts like Mumford and Sons, Fleet Foxes and Bon Iver becoming massively popular and it seems the trend has spread to our shores. For me the realisation that folk music is perhaps the ‘next big thing’ is illustrated by Rhythm Records (the label that signed Fokofpolisiekar and had the balls to back them) signing folkstress Laurie Levine.

Levine however, hasn’t just jumped on a bandwagon. She has been playing and performing for six years now and has just released her third album (and first with Rhythm Records) entitled ‘Six Winters’.

Now Levine, like her international counterparts above, is not a folk artist with a particular social or political message but her lyrics take on a story-telling mode and the music is undeniably folk-based. With touches of country – there’s a cover of Johnny Cash’s ‘Ring of Fire’ – and a whiff of the blues and even some pop.

The singer-songwriter has a bewitching voice, sweet like a child’s but still strong and confident. This gives her songs an innocence that can work against her, especially if the subject matter is dark. Mostly though, she is versatile enough to overcome this.  

Laurie Levine also isn’t scared to experiment with different sounds and instruments. Where folk music is traditionally kept quite simple, ‘Six Winters’ was made using 17 different instruments as well as some electronic components. You may think this would make the songs cluttered but you’d be wrong; producer Dan Roberts and Levine have managed to maintain that simplicity while still created a rich, layered product.

Lyrical content ranges from the reminiscent ‘Six Winters’, to a story about a lose woman in ‘Stray’. From the sad and lonely ‘Hand on my heart’ and ‘Where have you gone’ to the pain filled ‘Heaven’s Door’. Laurie is a great writer and in true folk music fashion, her words are emotive and real. There is no fantasy or role-playing here.

Stand out tracks for me are opener ‘Oh Brother’, ‘I won’t ask him why’, ‘Stray’, ‘Where have you gone’ and ‘Beautiful Loser’.

The resurgence of folk music is an interesting phenomenon after the hectic popularity of rock and, more recently, electro. Perhaps we’ve burnt out and need to sit down for a bit and relax. We’ll have to wait and see where this goes but I don’t think it's going to stop any time soon and this album by Laurie Levine is a great offering that can only endear people to the movement.
