Wonderful toddler dress with Sashiko & Caring. It is always a sincere pleasure to receive photos from our Sashiko friends who took our Sashiko Online Class / In-person workshop. Once one learns the core, they will have an ability to apply it to anywhere. What I do is to help them find their own Sashiko.  ☆ Sashiko became a big trend. I am happy that many are enjoying Sashiko. Many advise me it is “the time” to take action. Well. I prefer to know who is enjoying Sashiko personally instead of spreading all the information around. I would like to prioritize “whom” I have been sharing with instead of “how many” I have shared the Sashiko. It is my sincere pleasure to get to know of a Sashiko practitioner, with the skill & wisdom of what the Japanese would have practiced a few hundreds years ago.  ☆ Sashi.Co is just a duo of a mother and her son. @UpcycleStitches is a single member company. This may be “the time” to expand the business with even taking a risk, but I purposefully don’t. I would like to know who I am sharing - personally and carefully. (Another reason I am making every single package with my own hands. A human is behind the screen). I appreciate many reactions to the previous post. I just wanted to add to avoid unfortunate misunderstandings. It is fine (by me) to celebrate the “imperfection” within your own creation. I am nowhere to define what “perfect” and “beauty” are. The posts are not triggered by any specific people. I feel it is like a trend now (phenomena), so please do not feel that I am accusing someone specific. ☆ In fact, my message contains something similar to “Beauty in Imperfection” such as “Do not focus on the result much” or “stop judging what you can do and enjoy who you are”. However, in my understanding, “Beauty in Imperfection” is more like a mindset - not the result itself (only). ☆ The people I respect try(ied) to be better in Sashiko. They try to stitch as “perfect” as a human possible can be. Doing Sashiko for a few months and defining Sashiko as the “beauty in imperfection” for others is kinda insulting. Again, it is fine if it concludes within oneself. ☆ - - ☆ Sashiko is NOT a practice to embrace the imperfection. We enjoy Sashiko as a beautiful stitching because of their years of practice & improving. Again, it is fine when someone celebrates the beauty in imperfection. However, when you tell others about Sashiko, please keep these words in your mind - Sashiko is not about embracing the beauty in imperfection. It is my pleasure to talk about Sashiko after they learn the “Unshin” - how to move the needle in Sashiko - from me. I teach both in Japanese and English, and interestingly, the changes within them are pretty similar. They will find their own Sashiko, soon or later, and I am just a navigator.  ☆ Techniques and skills are very important in Sashiko. However, mastering techniques & skills themselves will not make Sashiko as “Japanese Sashiko”. I am learning the difference within a word “Judo” - the Japanese martial arts as Budo (武道）and sport/combat. Sashiko is probably much more than what you think/know. ☆ - - - ☆ 「縁」という音に惹かれます。えにし。”つながり”という意味の言葉ですが、もともとは仏教用語の「（間接的な）因」という訳語のようです。縁起が良いとは、その因が起こった場所が良いということのようで。 ☆ 因と果は常に循環し続け、今日の結果が明日の起因になったりします。常に循環し続ける毎日だからこそ、「居場所」があると良いなぁと思うのです。3年前に始めた運針会は、もちろん「運針をお教えする講習会」ではあるのですが、同時にその居場所にご参加頂いても苦しくないような前提 - 因 - 縁を作る機会だと思っています。時に笑い、時に無言で、カメラ越しにずーっと刺し子する人々の集まり。素敵な居場所を作れているなぁと思います。（夜8時半開始→11時就寝→3時に目が覚めたらまだ続いてた。アメリカ時間です）。 ☆ 本来は一人で完結するのが「刺し子」です。日常だったから、家族という単位で完結するものだったはずです。それの息抜きの場として、きっと集まりがあったはずで、きっとそれは当時の女性たちにとって大切な居場所だったと思うんでしすよね。そんな縁を大切にしながら、続けていけたらと思うのです。 ☆ #Sashiko #JapaneseSashiko #SashikoWorkshop #SashikoBasics #SashikoClass #RhythmicalStitching #SashikoDenim #Unshin #LearnSashiko #OnlineSashikoClass #刺し子 #運針 #日本人の刺し子 #運針会 https://www.instagram.com/p/CFrlCzIpEZ6/?igshid=1l93xof5003uc

This is a piece I started last year in 24-hours Sashiko stitching. I hoped to do the same this year, but it will be canceled (postponed). When we introduce this kind of “big” Sashiko, people say, “Wow, but I cannot do that big piece. I don’t have that much patience.” Well, it is not about patience - it is about if the stitcher knows the concept of “Unshin”. ☆ When I started teaching Sashiko in English, this was the most challenging concept to share - it is still most challenging since it requires a paradigm shift. However, once they get the concept after the workshop (Online Class) and if they continue enjoying Sashiko, they would say, “Yes, I can do that”. Sashiko is not about making perfect stitches. ☆ - - - ☆ 暖かくなり、ガレージと僕の寝室の間に間仕切りをつける必要がなってきました。本来であれば1ヶ月後にはできるはずだった24時間刺し子の第一回目の去年に着手した、あの大きな一枚布です。今年は24時間刺し子はできそうにないですが、でも、この大きな作品は、少しずつでも良いから針を通して行けたらと思っています。 ☆ これだけ大きな布に刺し子をすると話をすると、「根気があるんだね」とか、「修行みたいだな。私にはできないわ」と、褒め言葉なのか呆れられているのかよく判別がつかない（笑）言葉を頂くのですが、僕には根気はないし、修行みたいな苦しいことは苦手です。純粋に楽しい……というか、しないと不自然な気持ちになるんです。 ☆ 毎朝お味噌汁を飲む習慣を続けている人は、毎朝あの塩気の多いスープを飲むことを疑問には思わないでしょ？僕自身お味噌汁大好きなので、毎日でも飲みたいのですが、文化習慣が変わると、「朝から塩気の多いスープは苦痛でしか無い」となるのです。刺し子も似ていて、習慣になると、無い方が気持ち悪くなるんです。その為には、運針が重要な役割をします。（ほぼ）無意識で針を動かせるようになると、習慣にしやすいです。ネギの小口切りの厚さをいちいち気にしないように、針目もいちいち気にしません。気にしてたらやってられない。刺し子の本来の楽しさを伝えていけたらいいなと思うのです。 ☆ #Sashiko #JapaneseSashiko #runningstitce #Meditation #RhythmicalStitching #Mindful #Handstitching #SashikoStitching #Unshin #JapaneseBoro #刺し子 #運針 #刺し子カーテン https://www.instagram.com/p/B_4yE-gpdil/?igshid=1oxp5tlbvvujn

Don’t let fear override you. Don’t allow anxiety to control what you do. The worry comes from “unknown”. Avoid being unnaturally positive, too. It is okay to freak out. It is natural to feel guilt/shame that you may not be able to maintain the "same". Close your eyes. Sit on the floor. Position your body, then stitch. It will be okay. We will be okay. The "Care" can define who we are. ☆ This is a phrase I tell myself before the morning Sashiko session. I used to have 15~ min of morning meditation. Now, I replaced the meditation with just 5 ~ minutes of Sashiko every morning before a super busy day starts. ☆ We, our ancestors, lived in the unknown. Before the IT, the Internet, and Industrial Revolution, the majority of us lived mainly for the food, shelter, and cloth. The Japanese who developed Sashiko didn’t have stability in life. They didn’t know if they would survive through the winter. They hoped, but it wasn’t guaranteed. The unknown was their ordinary, and therefore they stitched and “prayed”. We all get used to “receiving” the answer so easily - instant gratification. Therefore, the productivity, solution based innovation, and the competition were so important to be successful. Now, we are forced to standstill. It may be a time to remember what our ancestors did - and my message is to practice Sashiko as they did. It “can” help. At least, I keep my sanity in there. ☆ “Don’t step on the gas pedal when the gear is in neutral (or “P”). It will only burn the engine.” We will have time to go forward - may be a different direction - and we need our “vehicle” to do so when the time comes. Take care of yourself, please? Try Sashiko with your eyes closed. Sashiko is too ordinary for me to “summarize” what it is. However, what the market (society) want is a short & effective abstract. It is important for me to keep trying to express what Sashiko is - with explaining & involving as much messages as possible. ☆ Live Streaming is one of my challenge to express my wholestory into a few hours. I may repeat the same things over and over (although my intention is to share something new to appreciate the frequent audience - friends). Well, I will think what I can do in Live Streaming. ☆ There are a lot of “imcomplete” information out there. Sashiko, Boro, Wabi-Sabi… most of the Japanese terms I often see do not describe the whole picture of what it is. I guess, it is my responsibility, as a native Japanese, to describe the missing link there. おかげ様で「刺し子の運針会」、7月に2回開催することができそうです。初とも言える週末の開催を検討していて、7月18日（土）午前9時〜4時間弱の運針会は開催確定済みです。後2名程度は参加可です。平日にも予定しています。7月27日（月）午前9時〜4時間弱の運針会は、なんとか開催できれば良いなと思っています。 ☆ 「刺し子には（淳の）運針がなければいけない！」なんてことは言いません。先日から言っているようなお味噌汁みたいなもので、運針にもそれぞれの形があり、それぞれの進め方があります。ただ、「刺し子には運針は必要ない」とは思ってほしくないなぁと。ひと針目ずつ縫う刺し子だけじゃなくて、意識せずに針を勧める運針を楽しんで頂ければ何よりです。 ☆ 運針、誰でもできるようになります。水泳とか自転車と一緒で、一度できるようになると、忘れる方が難しいレベルです。昔は日本全国各地で行われていた針仕事です。そんな「ひとつの形」の運針を学んで頂ければ嬉しいなと思っています。思いは募るばかりなので、またブログにでもします。詳細はSashico.comより、運針会の記事を一読頂けたら幸いです。（記事経由でお問い合わせ下さいませ）。 ☆ - - - ☆ I miss our time together so much. Thanks to my dear friend in NYC, I used to offer several In-person Workshops before Covid-19. Doubt what is normal. Don’t trust what we know. ☆ This is the phrase I always tell myself. My justice can be completely wrong in another culture. Until 2013, my justice was everything to me. I pushed through my “Correct” no matter what others say. Once I made myself “justified”, then it was okay to do “whatever”. My wife changed me, and I am very thankful for it. ☆ We often feel that “It is not in my dictionary”. However, we have to understand that there may be another dictionary, and some dictionaries may say something different especially in another language, in another culture. Therefore, I carefully choose words, and try to write in English because I respect the country where I am living now. ☆ The same concept goes to a fabric mask and Sashiko. We all want to have the correct answer. However, the truth often is not as simple as asking “Alexa” for the population of Japan. Many people ask me what is “Correct” in Sashiko. Yes, I do have my own “Correct” in Sashiko, and I can tell you that. However, it is the same as pushing my dictionary to others. So, I share the stories. I encourage people to do Sashiko as we do. One day, they will find their own “Correct” in Sashiko. I have seen so many students (now, my friends) who found their own Sashiko. Once you find your own Sashiko, then the Sashiko “as a Japanese culture” will be passed down regardless of our voice.
