Scars mean you survived. - a pacific rim au fic with rian.
He got his first scar when he was six years old: a skinned knee from falling out of the tree in their back yard. His parents always said he was lucky that's all he got but he wore the mark proudly, made up stories about slaying dragons and saving people and he came this close to being defeated. His younger brother and sister loved hearing about it and would prod the mark with childish curiosity. Rian was their hero and that scar made it real.
His second scar came about when he was ten years older. His temper had flared since his older brother disappeared to God only knew where and he was volatile at the worst of times. The smallest thing could set him off and that's exactly what happened. "Guess he felt like you were just holding him back, right Rian?" He should have known better but it didn't stop him throwing the first punch, the skin across his knuckles breaking the same way as the other guy's nose did. There was a certain viciousness to the punches thrown and he's reminded of it every time he looks at the thin white scars dusting his knuckles. That was the last time he'd ever throw a punch in his brother's defense.
Rian's worst scars, the third lot he received just weeks after his seventeenth birthday, were ones he wore proudly. They marked his back in random criss-crosses, deep lines and fainter grazes. To that very day he could still feel the weight of the debris collapsing down in him, rubble of what used to be their roof, and how he could feel a fifteen year old Hagen crying beneath him. If he hadn't cocooned himself in a protective shield over his brother... He hated to think of it. Rian would just be grateful for his reflexes, his mind and body responding faster than fear could. He'd saved his brother that day, saved the last of his family before the Kaiju attack could claim them all.
The most recent addition, and no doubt far from last, is the small one just above his right eyebrow. Roughhousing gone wrong, he claims, but everyone knows it was Hagen's payback for calling him the baby of the group. The kid could certainly fight - he was taught by the best - and it served to remind Rian that while he was still his younger brother he was by no means to be underestimated.
The scars Rian carries are not signs of weakness or frailty. They're not losses or even petty victories. They're reminders that he is, in fact, alive. That he survived.
