I’m fascinated by how Gintoki has rejected the label as “older brother” of Kagura (rakuyo) and Shinpachi (beam saber) and asserts himself as their “Yorozuya Gin-chan” who fights to protect them and keep their families intact.

He doesn’t want to replace Otae and Kamui or steal the role of Shimura Ken and Umibozu because those bonds are equally important to the kids. He tends to downplay his importance to the kids, but they will always remind him how special he is (literally the entire show, but amnesia & four devas give the most substance)

There is no fixed roles to the Yorozuya “family” (they’re only playing house with varying commitment) and while Gintoki has said he doesn’t understand family, he adopts a Shoyo-esque guardian role in Shinpachi and Kagura’s lives proudly! They’re the odd jobs and they’ll do any odd jobs and that includes being there for each other through happy and sad times!!!
