Sports Hat from Ribbons from the Antique Pattern Library
Before the 1960s, women were not considered fully dressed in public without a hat with rare exceptions. Even when sportswear was appropriate.
Which explains why this sports hat was offered in this Ribbon Art Book from the 1920s which has been reproduced and is free to download by the Antique Pattern Library. The 1920s favored the smaller, close-to-the-head hat with no brim or only a small brim. This of the cloche hat which is French for bell. This was a big shift from the previous decade when large brims were still fashionable. Small hats put the emphasis on the neat bobbed haircuts that were the trend.
This page offers directions for all the items pictured including the hats. These are dressmaker hats, so-called because they are made by sewing, as opposed to blocked hats made by professionals out of thick felt. The problem here becomes finding the right kind of ribbons. The one on the lower left is made of 8-inch ribbons which are not something you can easily find. In fact, I don’t think I have ever seen a ribbon that wide. But the pattern would work just as well with fabric if you add seams to the edges of the pattern given. It’s harder to work out how to recreate some of the trims which often required wide ribbon too, and the finished edges a ribbon offered.

Beautiful girl had some mending done tonight -- I removed the VERY HEAVY belt that was causing strain to the chiffon, but can wear it without it being attached.. hopefully! Did some stabilizing/darning with a matching blue chiffon I bought the entire bolt of, knowing I would use it someday >:) #antiquedress #1910s #1910sfashion #antiqueclothing #1900s #edwardiandress #edwardian #vintageclothing #antiqueclothing #ribbonwork #antiqueribbonwork #metallicembroidery #metalliclace #loftyvintage (at New Hampshire) https://www.instagram.com/p/BqoUCdwAung/?utm_source=ig_tumblr_share&igshid=1qw5x2av88hyx

Is it bad to say I've been waiting nearly a year to do this photoshoot? I went out to feed the birds this morning and knew it was the day and rushed to get makeup on! My handmade amethyst rose headdress is finally complete and will be listed on Etsy this week, along with more gorgeous photos that my roommate helped me take ♥
(I’ve also got some REALLY great outtakes from the shoot ;D Maybe I’ll post them here)
