“ i dreamt you chose me instead. ”

It’s the second time. This time he doesn’t simply show up at dawn, in the middle of a suffocating panic attack. It takes more than a pair of arms to lull him to sleep. There’s still tears rolling down his dirty face when he finally does. Oliver doesn’t much sleep that night. He’s worried Connor might wake up and do something stupid. He nearly downs half a bottle of jack to calm his own nerves. He falls asleep just before the sun’s up; woken up by shuffling on the bed. Connor’s already getting dressed, a pained look on his face. 

“Connor,” Oliver murmurs, scrambling to his feet. “Where are you going?”

“I’ve got to... go,” is the only reply he gets as the younger man jumps into the dusty pair of jeans. He wonders what happened. This time he doesn’t smell like smoke, but... it’s obviously connected. God, he’d been so stupid to assume it was about drugs. This is something else. He wasn’t high last night, he was ruined. 

“No, no. You did this once, I’m---” Oliver has to pause in order to calm himself down, a stern look on his face as he stares his boyfriend down. “You can’t just leave. If I wouldn’t have been here last night...”

“I would’ve gone to bed.”

“No, Con. You wouldn’t have. You...” There’s a tense silence smothering them for several seconds even if he doesn’t complete his sentence. They both know what he means. Connor licks his lips, his gaze falling to the floor below. 

“I can’t tell you.”

“God, why do you keep doing this? I’m a big boy, I don’t need your god damn protection all the time. I’m asking you to tell me.”

“I can’t tell you.” Connor repeats, his voice is barely more than a whisper.

“You have to tell me. It’s me or your stupid belief that shutting up about whatever’s up will somehow keep me safe. What about keeping you safe?”

“I fucking... Can we talk about this later? Please, I’ve really got to...”

Oliver just lets him go. He calls work and claims he’s sick before he downs the rest of the booze. Then he gets anxious about not being awake when Connor comes back. He doesn’t, though. Near midnight, he manages to fall asleep. He doesn’t want to, but he has a good dream. He’s almost sad when he feels a pair of hands on him, shaking him awake.

“Oliver?” He blinks, gazing up at Connor’s pained face. He still hasn’t showered, dirt and tears still on his face. He has a haunted look, and Oliver’s stomach drops. He knows what he’s going to say, why he’s here, why he’s bothering to wake him up. 

“I dreamt you chose me instead,” Oliver whispers.

“you’re so lucky i love you,” hakeem grumbled as his hands rubbed along the expanse of tyler’s back, putting pressure on the spots that the shorter boy claimed ached. “you owe me big time.” the words that came out were supposed to be spiteful and bitter, but instead they were light and endearing, almost loving. there was no way in hell hakeem could ever really be angry at the other male. he was his kryptonite; everyone knew that. their friends and family, even people they hadn’t known very long. most of keem’s professors knew his boyfriend by name seeing as how he spoke about him at any given chance. his expression softened as he stared down at the defined muscles and ligaments of tyler’s back, rubbing the heel of his hand against his shoulder blade firmly, before he leaned down and pressed soft kisses up the spine of his back, then let his lips land behind his ear. “better?”
