#MovieoftheDay: Andy (1965) Movies I Want to See 2/50 The story of Andy (Norman Alden), a mentally impaired man living in New York City with his parents, and the struggles faced by both of them as they try to figure out his future. Like Americana, this is one of those little films that just fell through the cracks a long time ago, but unlike Americana, there's virtually no trace of Andy online - all the more frustrating because this was actually a studio release (Universal). Maybe it's available through some VOD or MOD service, but I haven't found it. Google searches tend to draw me towards Andy Warhol, anyway. But by all accounts, this is a sweet and sensitive drama, one of the earliest films with a mentally handicapped protagonist that I know of—it predates Charly by several years, and of course lacks that film's fantastical elements. That the cast is composed mainly of New York-area character actors (the only other name I recognized was Ann Wedgworth) only adds to my interest. There's a lot of notable NYC cinema from this era—any era, to be sure, but as independent and semi-independent film began to rise it reasserted itself as a filmmaking center. Andy doubtless serves as something of a time capsule for a side of the city rarely before profiled in the cinema.
