I listened to this podcast where Richard was talking about how he got really into Shakespeare and became obsessed, which just confirms to be my Shakespeare reincarnation belief (like in the sense that he could be the equivalent to modern Shakespeare)! but also how he uses Shakespeare in his works e.g. monologue in Half Man, but maybe also his approach to acting?!? Also I feel like I’ve been reading some of his book recs, and I can’t say this enough but I highly recommend the young team if you enjoyed half man!

ohhhh interesting... do you have a link for the podcast?? i'd LOVEEE to listen :DD i'm not super knowledgeable when it comes to shakespeare HAHAH but i think there's definitely an argument to be made about his influence/touch on richard's writing and fluidity in acting <3 think there's a theatre quality to both that's lovely. and oh!! THANK YOUUUU i'll look this up on goodreads--is it the one by graeme armstrong??

The thing is, do I want to rewatch half man and/ir baby reindeer cause I miss seeing Richard Gadd on my screen? But also it’s so hard to watch too? Like I can’t even finish myself watching fellow Travelers (a very sad show with Jonathan Bailey and Matt bomer if you haven’t seen it), idk how I’d finish watching either of these series

no I totally get this. I haven’t watched half man all the way through except for when it aired. there are definitely individual episodes and a handful of scenes i’ve rewatched a million times so between that and all the tumblr posts and stuff, I think I’ve sort of desensitized myself to a lot of the show? however I haven’t been able to watch episodes five and six in their entirety again. that level of stress is none of my business. you’re right, so much of the show is hard to watch

baby reindeer was also uncomfortable and I fear it’s a one-time watch for me from start to finish? idk, maybe not. I’d rewatch that whole monologue/public confession scene again just because of how breathtakingly vulnerable it is. the man loves to deliver scenes that feel like being allowed to witness someone’s deepest pain on such a human level. it’s truly masterful

idk I feel ya. I miss rg a lot. his level of intention, depth, and vulnerability takes balls of steel that most writers don’t have… it’s so rare in media these days so it’s nearly impossible to fill the void his work leaves. I know we’re all saying it, but we could really use some bts, deleted scenes, The Playlists, etc right about now 🥺

i didn't know the husbands was based on a book! apparently a very well loved book, shows what i know. now i have to fetch it, the concept really intrigued me.

and well. if ever someone had the range to pull that off...

so I finally listened to You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love, and I really loved it. I was pleasantly surprised about ‚Expectations‘ in that I really loved the 80s synths (at least I think it was that) vibes to it. Definitely up there with my favourites. I feel like it was overly a melancholy album but I really enjoyed it. I really love how Olivia takes her time to release albums and doesn’t rush. It feels like a treat whenever she releases a new album.

Glad you loved it! I was thinking 80s too for expectations and a lot of the other non-ballads. I really appreciate how she tries so many different styles and seems to just have fun with new sounds.

As much as I love getting new music from my favorite artists, I would much rather wait for them to craft a project they love than rush to get something done. I'd take that any day.

And yeah, overall I thought it was very sad. Even the happy side is sad to me - themes of waiting around for someone's attention, struggling with eating and sleeping because of relationship stuff, arguing with a partner over spending time with your friends, them having a "friend" or "ex" who wears their clothes still,and just generally a feeling of obsession that almost seemed more prominent than love.

I find it so interesting that all three (Richard; Jamie - though on purpose and Stuart - I am not so much sure about Mitchell), could be considered self insert in terms of Niall. Each of the three men very much have elements that they can relate to in terms of Niall as a character.

Stuart Campbell originally auditioned for Niall but was too tall, however I think he related Niall in terms of insecurity but maybe personality? Then with Jamie Bell, I think it’s also similar in terms of how he has talked about the self loathing aspect that he has experienced in the past. You can really tell though that Niall was written for Jamie in many ways, one of my favourite scenes is the comment about dancing, and also as a joke we don’t see Jamie dance despite Niall attending a dance class - I feel like there’s comedic affect there.

Richard also fairly easy to say as in many ways Niall is very similar to Richard in terms of I think the struggle of sexuality that he has experienced in the past, but also other aspects like the scene where Niall is getting asked questions about Ruben rather than his writing, reminds me a bit about when Richard was probably asked about his personal stuff (such as who people were based on etc) rather than his work whilst Baby Reindeer was airing.

I think Ruben is more or less an insert of broken traumatised toxic behaviour looks like if it were personified.

I didn't know Stuart had originally auditioned for Niall, it's hard to picture him in that role but I do think maybe relating to Niall's character gave him some insight into playing Ruben's character in relation to it.

And obviously there are many different ways to approach acting, but maybe in this particular case them relating to the characters helped to bring tgat certain intensity to the acting.
