First Impressions
Today I started a Customer Psychology module at university. I had studied Philosophy at A-level where we commonly had to include a Psychologists point of view, such as Freud. We started off by discussing social influence; exploring how attitudes and beliefs were formed, understanding persuasion and changing the minds of others via communication.
I read around the topic and stumbled across work by Johnson and McCauley (2007) where they said “You will find in your marketing careers that organisational life is a world that is navigated through discourse and where persuasion is central to the way things get done.” Upon reading this it only made sense to gain a greater knowledge of how to really use persuasion for my personal advantage.
With this focus on persuasion I read Perloff’s ‘The Dynamics of Persuasion’ he stated that “Persuasion is not simply a science, however – it is also an art”. With this it made it clear the tools we were learning were much more than something to merely convince someone to agree with our point.
