June 12, 1567 – Death of Richard Rich, 1st Baron Rich, Lord Chancellor of England

On June 12, 1567, Richard Rich, one of the most controversial figures of Tudor England, died at the age of about 70. A skilled lawyer, politician, and courtier, Rich rose from relatively modest origins to become one of the most powerful men in the kingdom during the reign of Henry VIII.

Rich's career flourished during the English Reformation. As a loyal servant of the Crown, he supported Henry VIII's break with Rome and played a major role in the Dissolution of the Monasteries, which transferred vast church wealth and lands to the king. His loyalty earned him significant rewards, including extensive estates and noble status.

However, Rich's reputation was tarnished by his involvement in several high-profile political trials. He is particularly remembered for providing crucial testimony against Sir Thomas More in 1535, testimony many contemporaries considered unreliable. Rich also played roles in the downfall of other prominent Tudor figures, contributing to his image as an ambitious and ruthless political survivor.

Despite serving under successive monarchs—Henry VIII, Edward VI, Mary I, and Elizabeth I—Rich managed to retain much of his wealth and influence. His ability to navigate the dangerous politics of Tudor England was remarkable, though it came at the cost of a lasting reputation for opportunism.

Richard Rich's death marked the end of a career that embodied both the opportunities and moral complexities of the Tudor age. Few men rose higher—or inspired more suspicion—than the man who became Lord Chancellor of England.
