  A three-over 74 probably wasn’t the start that Richie Ramsay had in mind for the first round of the Scottish Open over his home course, Royal Aberdeen. However, the 30-year-old can still take some satisfaction from his round, after his birdies at the ninth and 13th holes helped raise money for a worthy local cause.

In a bid to make Richie’s strokes count for even more this week, one of the tournament sponsors, Aker Solutions, has agreed to donate £100 to cancer charity ‘Friends of ANCHOR’ for every birdie he scores during the Scottish Open.

With Aker Solutions’ year-long partnership with Friends of ANCHOR and Ramsay’s own personal affiliation with the cause as official patron of the charity’s annual golf fundraiser, the initiative could prove to be a valuable boost for North-East cancer patients, who will ultimately benefit from the on-course challenge.

Ramsay, who shook off a shoulder injury to take his place in the field this week, said: “This generous gesture from the team at Aker Solutions makes playing in this tournament even more special for me.

“Knowing I can bring in £100 for every birdie I score in the tournament is an extra, added incentive for me to perform well.” – Richie Ramsay

Qatar Masters Betting Preview

Last this year tournament was disrupted by extremely strong winds which saw Paul Lawrie win comfortably.

My first pick is Thorbjorn Olesen at 28/1 - 1.5pts e/w.

Olesen only made one bogey in 72 holes last week, so he is obviously in great form and has warmed to his new clubs.

At 28/1 I think he is a great shout and is golfer I think is destined for the heights of the game.

My second pick is Richie Ramsay at 66/1 - 0.75 pts E/W.

Richie is a top quality ball striker and can be a streaky putter. Last week he averaged over 70% in GIR and driving accuracy.

Ramsay sits just outside of the top 50 in the OWGR and I think this will give him great encouragement with the Masters looming. A good week here, in this strong field could help on the quest to Augusta.

There are also links between Doha, Crans (where Richie won) and Gleneagles, as highlighted by BettingZone’s Ben Coley.

My final pick is Gonzalo Fernandez-Castaño at 45/1- 1 pt E/W.

Another quality ball striker in Castaño makes my final pick.

The price really caught my eye with Gonzo this week after a decent showing last week.

With Gonzo it often depends on his ability to make putts as his tee to green game is of the highest quality.

He hit 76% of greens last week in Abu Dhabi but was let down by his putter - taking 31 on average per round. If he gives himself plenty of opportunities this week, which he likely will, he won’t ever be too far from the lead.
