who do you think should win the iron throne? i think stannis, mostly because he's so... ugh i can't describe it. he's loving, he's just, and he's smart. i don't know. i used to want daenerys to win, but... hm.
let me direct you to my url hehe but yeah, i think stannis should win. for reasons somewhat summarily stated.
as for daenerys, i think she’s an interesting character. definitely. meaty backstory, meaty character development, and you definitely see her growing into the role of leader as the series goes along however she’s not the leader i’m rooting for. in terms of sincerity—she’s got that. you know she’s got good intentions, stemming from her own personal experiences and the injustices she’s been dealt throughout her life. but i guess what makes her a morally good character for me influences why i don’t root for her. her leadership isn’t so much leadership, imo, but a sort of quest for self-actualization. winning the iron throne is only a vehicle for something else, some kind of retribution for the life she’s lived. she wants to free slaves because she, herself, has been a slave from one overlord (viserys) to another (khal drogo). she doesn’t lead kingdoms as they should be led (imo), with understanding of politics and structure and institutions; instead, she subdues kingdoms in the way that she’s been subdued. she bows them to her whim, to her moral code. she’s a bully because she’s been bullied. it just so happens that her moral code is agreeable to the reader because she clashes with dominant powers that are fundamentally “evil”, powers that have slavery and domination and greed and prosperity to their discredit.
she’s a revolutionary rather than a queen, i think. at least that’s how i see her. and that’s not to imply a blight on her character. but what happens after she’s attained self-actualization? what happens after she ~breaks the ~shackles of slavery to vindicate the oppression she experienced in her life? what happens after she’s won the iron throne in order to restore what had been robbed from her family? the series is far from over, and i suppose i’ll get my answers as the books come out but what doesn’t appeal to me, right now, when it comes to daenerys is that i don’t know where she’s going. not necessarily because, yanno, she’s been waylaid from her quest to ~win the throne but because i don’t know what she plans to do as a monarch.
she can revolutionize norms, definitely, she can reform the system, but all according to her own set of values. that’s why dance with dragons ended the way it did for her, because she’d failed to take into account that conquest has politics, war has consequences. she knows how to fight from the bottom upwards—she knows how to survive, definitely. i appreciate that about her character. but she doesn’t know what to do with her power. she’s veering towards vengeance, now that she’s turned the tide towards her. vengeance and retribution. but after she’s won all that, what’s she going to do? what’s she going to do with power?
i need to see her with restraint, with conscious control over the immense power that she has—what with the dragons and the… the dragons. because being a monarch in a medieval setting means that you’re going to be unchecked. you have free reign over everything and no one can say no to you expect if they’re willing to call on their banners and make you do things. (and that’s only if they win against you and your absolute power over the rest of the realm.)
though i guess the next books do leave room for further character growth in that area. i can’t really say yet. who knows, maybe stannis will also falter at some point. but so far, yeah, it’s stannis for me.
whAT IS YOUR OPINION ON STEVEN MOFFAT
Aaah I don’t know what to say.. I really liked the last episode of DW and BBC Sherlock is my favourite thing ever. I don’t know why everybody’s hating on him. Probably I haven’t seen enough of dw idk
