The legalism that drives perfectionism is an illusionary lifestyle. It only works if we can hide our real problems—our true selves—by avoiding public scrutiny. Think fig leaves (Genesis 3:7). If we can keep our issues hidden, we can present ourselves well in a performance-based religious culture that pursues righteousness and harshly judges mistakes.
There are only two reasons a person will not mature in Christ according to his God-given character, capacities, and competencies. Either he is not a Christian, or he has a sin in his life.

A genuinely repentant person is a broken and contrite person who has come to the end of himself (Luke 15:17), which starts with God’s favor (James 4:6). He is singing through quivering lips, “Nothing in my hand I bring; simply to Thy cross I cling.”
Perhaps his actions ruined his relationships, and more self-reliant efforts would only worsen matters even if good intentions were behind them (Isaiah 64:6). He needs a better strategy, so he begs for God’s help.
