I’ve been watching SGDQ 2016 (a twice-a-year, week long video game marathon for charity). The 1080 Avalanche speedrun was amazing. The runner did an awesome job, and I’ve never seen an audience be this enthusiastic at 2 in the morning. WOO!

A Newcomer Approaches .... Ricky Winterborn!

Name: Ricky Winterborn Original Series: 1080 Snowboarding

The series may have slid into the land of the forgotten recently, but the two first-party games in the 1080 series received fairly good reviews and had moderate success. As one of the leads characters, Ricky Winterborn would be a good face for bringing this series back into the light of day in Smash. Other than the Ice Climbers, he would present a good opportunity for snow/ice based moves which aren't exactly common in Smash now.

He would slam his board around for some of his standard and smash attacks, using his main piece of equipment for some good range and good damage-dealing ability. As a racer, he's fairly quick too, and for extra speed he jumps on his board to zoom along the ground instead of running.

Ricky's attacks:

Standard B - Snowball ... Ricky's fairly young and enjoys having fun between his runs down the slops, and what better way for a kid in the snow to have fun than by starting a snowball fight? He'll quickly roll up a snowball and hurl it forward. Hold B if you want to roll a bigger snowball which will cause more damage and have a chance of freezing the target, but which will have a shorter throwing range.

Side B - Slalom Flag ... Ricky hurls a slalom flag in a low arc out in front of him like a spear. If it's a direct hit it will cause standard damage, but if it misses it will stick in the ground and hang around for a while, acting like Wobuffet and returning attacks against it by rebounding back and forth and damaging the attacker.

Up B - 1080 ... Ricky leaps into the air on his board, spinning around in his game's difficult namesake trick and creating a cloud of snow around him as he arcs through the air. Anyone hit by his spinning board will take damage and be knocked back.

Down B - Backside Boardslide ... Ricky slides forward quickly on his board a short distance, then comes to an abrupt stop, kicking up a wave of snow in front of him that damages and maybe freezes anyone caught in it. The move also leaves the short path he slide along slippery with ice for a brief time, so opponents trying to come up behind Ricky are prone to slip, giving him a bit of defense behind him.

Final Smash - Avalanche ... Ricky straps on his board as cascading snow and ice roars across the stage. Ricky rides along the deadly avalanche safely atop his board, but anyone caught in the stage-wide disaster will take lots of damage and may even get swept off the side of the stage if they can't get free. Ricky will ride the snow off the edge of the stage, but at the end of the final smash, he will appear back on the stage safe and sound.

Now there's an idea! We fully expect at least one of the remaining characters to completely blindside us, and a 1080 Snowboarding character would do just that!

While we're at it, let's throw in Wave Race, since those games share a few characters. Ladies and gents, grab your snowboards and jet skis, and let's get this party started!

The 1080 and Wave Race series were popular racers back in the days of the 64 and Gamecube. 1080 had the original 1080 Snowboarding on the N64 as well as a sequel on the Gamecube called 1080: Avalanche. Wave Race, on the other hand, had three installments. One each on the Game Boy, N64, and Gamecube.

As you can imagine, the characters in these games don't do much beyond snowboarding and jet skiing, so moveset potential's a bit low, unfortunately. But! That's never stopped Sakurai before, has it, Captain Falcon? Besides, it wouldn't be too out of the question to come up with a moveset involving some snow or water powers, would it?

Now, as for who our representative could be, our personal top pick would not be Ricky Winterborn, but instead Akari Hayami. Only three characters appear in 1080 Snowboarding, 1080 Avalanche, and Wave Race: Blue Storm. These characters are Ricky Winterborn, Rob Haywood, and Akari Hayami. They're all good choices for playable characters, but we're giving the edge to Ms. Hayami simply because of the large number of new female characters we've seen this time around.

                  Really, though, any of them would be a great choice! Since their abilities are canonically the same and no one character really stands out as the "mascot," it could be any of the three.

Now, how would she work as a character in Smash? Well, as an Assist Trophy, she'd likely do something similar to Squirtle's Surf move in Brawl. Ride a giant wave or avalanche and knock the opponent off stage.

As a playable character? We'll have to get creative.

Side Special - Snowboard

"But wait," you say, "how would a snowboard let you move anywhere on a flat, non-snowy surface?"

To which I respond, "I dunno. Magic?"

It doesn't make much sense from a "Laws of Physics" standpoint, but it's competing against a character who can propel himself upward by farting. Your move, science!

But it'd be a pretty simple move! Akari pulls out her snowboard and jets sideways like Frozone from the Incredibles! Consider it much like Wario's Motorcycle, only it can leave a trail of ice in its wake that does a small amount of damage. Neat!

Down Special - Water Jet

Here's where we're gonna give her some new abilities she would not logically have at all. Water Jet would cause a few large jets of, well... Water, to shoot up around her. It would be used as a defensive move, to repel projectiles and knock away characters that get too close. Fun!

Up Special - Squirtle's Surf, but with a Jet Ski!

This move is exactly what it says in the title. It has the same effects, but Akari pulls out her jet ski to perform it.

...That's all we got. NEXT!

Neutral Special - Snowball

Now come on, wouldn't it be fun to start rolling a snowball and use it in battle? It could have different effects based on how big the snowball is. A small snowball would be a small projectile for minimal damage, while a large snowball would be rolled and would do no damage but would push the opponent away! Awesome!

Final Smash - Blizzard

Akari summons a giant blizzard that covers up the screen and does massive damage to all other players! It wouldn't have any knockback, however. It's up to Akari to deal the finishing blow!

Alternatively, a Tidal Wave could work just as well!

Well now, howbout that? We just came up with a moveset for a character never seen off her snowboard or jet ski before, and frankly, we think it ain't half bad!

Is she, or any 1080 character, really, likely at all to be a playable character?

Not outside of a Mii, honestly.

But Sakurai and his team have hit us with surprises before! And hey, we could easily see an Assist Trophy for the series! Here's hoping 1080 sees some representation outside of trophies!

Beating 1080 Avalanche is something that I've been trying to do for a while and the fact that I can't is making me angry.

On another note Ricky Winterborn is one of the cutest game characters out
