Testing my 7 yr old Charles Owen vs. a brand new Troxel.

I must say I'm team Charles Owen and will probably be returning this Troxel.

The Charles Owen is comfier and gets way less pushed back when I put pressure on the visor (both helmets were fully adjusted with straps tightened in the middle 2 photos).

They both twisted quite a bit when I tugged the side of the visor, but the Charles Owen wasn't always like that while the Troxel was from day one. The Charles Owen has felt looser on me this past year, which is why I'm helmet shopping, but I think it just expanded after I left it in my hot car one time too many. When I first got it I could tip my head down with it unbuckled and it wouldn't fall off.

I figured I'd try a Troxel again because they're cheaper, and for whatever stupid reason I thought they'd outperformed the Charles Owens in the Virginia Tech ratings, but I see now that I conflated Troxel with Tuffrider.

Note to self, double check ratings BEFORE buying.

Taking the top spot in the rankings is the $460 Champion Revolve X-Air MIPS helmet, but in good news for riders who are both frugal and safety conscious, the rest of the top three slots were filled by sub-$60 helmets, the Tuffrider Carbon Fiber ($58) and the IRH Equi-Lite ($50)

This is the first time in my entire equestrian career that I have had a helmet expire on me, but I am certainly not complaining! Hopefully I

Alright y'all,

I need help finding a CHEAP, GOOD helmet. My budget is $150 (I know, practically nothing in helmet terms). My question to you guys, is what helmets do y'all like best in that range? One K? Ovation? Dare I say Troxel? Bonus points if they're not too "venty" in the front so I can put a go pro mount on them easily. TIA

Well, I am kind of bummed. My dream of having the prefect brown tall boot brown helmet combo to go with my brown tack is once again being waylaid. Last year the issue was finding brown boots that worked for me. I finally did, but then had my accident last fall and had to buy a new helmet. I didn’t realize what a bad fit my One K was for me (not a bad helmet, just didn’t realize that the shape was just slightly wrong and I really shouldn’t have pressure on my forehead like I had every time I put my helmet on) until I tried on a CO JR8. It was like I wasn’t wearing a helmet at all, it was so comfortable. At the time I bought black, but was told that brown was available. 

Sold some things and called up the tack shop yesterday saying “hey, I want to order my brown JR8 now!” Well turns out that they don’t make the JR8 in brown. They don’t even seem to really make the GR8 in brown any more. The only place I saw it in brown was on SmartPak (for more money than I want to spend anyway. Almost $400 on a helmet is INSANE!). Even the CO official website doesn’t show it in brown. The only one they still make in brown is the AYR8 which is a slightly different fit anyway. 

So.... Now I have the boots, but not the helmet. Damnit all. I guess it will be black boots and black helmet forever and I should just give up (there was tons of drama last year with two different pairs of brown tall boots, one that the zipper broke after the first time wearing them, and a custom order that was totally wrong)!!

I mean maybe it’s a good thing anyway since I am showing in a purple coat, I should probably stick to traditional boot and helmet color, but I am so bummed. 

And no, the oval One K didn’t work for me either, it put pressure on the sides of my head, and the Trauma Void keeps sliding forward down on to my eyebrows so it doesn’t seem to want to fit either. The CO just sits where I put it and stays there without putting pressure on any part of my head.

I’m having a crisis. What do you mean my helmet to ride my horse is more secure than a goalie’s helmet?! WHAT DO YOU MEAN THE GUY WHO COULD TAKE A PUCK TO THE FACE CAN LOSE HIS HELMET EASIER THAN I CAN?!
