Vacation - Thinking of hills, kayaking, golf - Spring Green WI
So it was time to get out of town for a few days of much needed family vacation. We headed west to Spring Green WI. Far enough away, but not to far away. With a four year old, it is required to have an indoor pool, so we settled on a nice off-season deal at the House on the Rock Resort which is actually 6 miles from HOTR. I decided that this resort is a big time hidden gem. The decor is a bit dated (eighties), but the rooms were clean, food was good, staff was friendly.
Now to what we all care about. What was the riding like? Well, since it was a family vacation, running tends to be more likely to occur than riding and this was the case indeed. However, this didn't keep me from scouting out the roads. The resort actually sits down in a bowl. If you like golf, you might be in heaven here. I don't golf much, but I think I would play more if I lived near this course. If you like climbing on your bike, you will be in heaven here. Plenty of climbing and fast descents, little traffic and a massage, whirlpool and swimming when you return. Did I mention the Wisconsin River is right around the corner with a perfect launch for canoeing or kayaking. The running was pristine to.
So in summary, a family friendly resort, awesome setting in a secluded valley, unbelievable riding and running opportunities, great golf course, swimming, tennis, etc. If you go in-season, prices are higher. There are other nice resorts in the area that are less expensive. One thing to mention is you are around 10 miles from Governor Dodge which has mountain biking. More double-track than single track, but perhaps a good early season training ground. Blue Mounds isn't far away either. Don't forget a visit to House on the Rock or Taliesin.

We welcome in April this week. Lets hope for lots of 50-60 degree weather with reasonable precipitation.
