Way down below in earlier posts I linked to a fairly complete thing I wrote on cycling and my story.  There I talk about losing fat and not weight.  When I started from Potato mode to getting back on the bike I gained weight.  This is common.  Simple reason is muscle weighs more than fat.  As you exercise you gain muscle and your motor gets stronger and bigger. Ironically you grow muscle faster than burn fat at first. The good thing about that is you go faster and farther and can do stuff.  A bigger motor also burns more fuel.  Win Win.

Patience helps.

That is the reason I log my rides.  Every single one is recorded.  That is how I measure my progress.  I do get on the scale from time to time, and I know if I am up or down.  My real scale is 8 minute hill.  My current goal is to beat 7 minutes.  Objective numbers are best. Its is good to know you are holding your own.  It is good to know that the dip in your strength is just like last year at this time.
