Is the US the only country with a giant political cult due to alternative media or are we unique in that regard?
No, it was invented by Australia, Rubert Murdoch’s home country, and spread to the UK before coming to the US. Outside Murdoch’s infernal empire, you also have Putin’s Russia, Orbain’s Hungary, and Modi’s India. The UK is the worse which is still arguably a democracy.
Can the right-wing machine hold the base in an alternate reality long enough to get through the next election?
Starting with the rise of 24/7 right wing talk radio in the late 1980s, the fringe right has been creating a separate reality based on information which is not backed by fact or logic. With the help of Fox News, social media, and fundamentalist organizations, a person can go decades without ever being willingly exposed to objective news or public affairs information.
People inside the right wing bubble have been conditioned to regard any information from the outside which contradicts their worldview as a threat. To them the value of news is not how much it informs you but how much it reinforces your predetermined beliefs.
Sources outside the right wing bubble are regarded as enemies.
The recipe is always the same: attack independent media outlets as partisan enemies of the regime and, by proxy, enemies of the people.
People inside this bubble effectively submit to voluntary brainwashing. Few will ever change their minds because it would be regarded as disloyalty to their tribe.
That is precisely the kind of machine the US conservative movement has built: one designed to produce confusion and fear. Trump is its natural leader, the first Republican president to reflect the party’s contemporary core and character, and his impeachment is its ultimate test.
Don’t expect “moderate” Republican politicians to be swayed by evidence and facts. They are mostly gone or getting ready to retire. The party is firmly in the grip of ideological right wing authoritarians who make excuses for Trump’s incompetence, malfeasance, and kowtowing to certain foreign leaders.
There are no more moderates or responsible Republicans behind the curtain, keeping an eye on the difference between tribal tall tales and reality. Fox natives are running the show, including the federal government.
The best we can do for now is get our people to vote in large numbers and to strongly support fact-based media like NPR, the BBC, and PBS. Eventually the right wing media bubble will implode as the Republican demographic shrinks to a level where it is no longer a threat. But that could take a decade or more, so we can’t let up on persistence and vigilance.
This is a classic case of projection. Todd “Legitimate Rape” Akin is still hard at work rehabilitating his image as a victim of the liberal media. That hasn’t stopped him from saying incredibly ignorant things, however. During an interview with World Net Daily (truly a legitimate media outlet), Akin complained that people only believe what they want to…
"We are not going to have a supreme court that will overturn roe versus wade. there will be no more antonin scalias and samuel aleatos added to this court. we're not going to repeal health reform. nobody is going to kill medicare and make old people in this generation or any other generation fight it out on the open market to try to get health insurance. we are not going to do that. we are not going to give a 20% tax cut to millionaires and billionaires and expect programs like food stamps and kid's insurance to cover the cost of that tax cut. we'll not make you clear it with your boss if you want to get birth control under the insurance plan that you're on. we are not going to redefine rape. we are not going to amend the united states constitution to stop gay people from getting married. we are not going to double guantanamo. we are not eliminating the department of energy or the department of education or housing at the federal level. we are not going to spend $2 trillion on the military that the military does not want. we are not scaling back on student loans, because the country's new plan is that you should borrow money from their parents. we are not vetoing the dream act. we are not self-deporting. we are not letting detroit go bankrupt. we are not starting a trade war with china on inauguration day in january. we are not going to have, as a president, a man who once led a mob of friends to run down a scared, gay kid, to hold him down and forcibly cut his hair off with a pair of scissors while that kid cried and screamed for help and there was no apology, not ever. we are not going to have a secretary of state, john bolton. we are not bringing dick cheney back. we are not going to have a foreign policy shop stocked with architects of the iraq war. we are not going to do it. we had the chance to do that if we wanted to do that, as a country. and we said no!" — RACHEL MADDOW
