TODAY WE CELEBRATE BERNIE MAC! One of the stories Bernie told was about his second appearance on Def Comedy Jam. He said that a lot of comedians, himself included, had been ‘discovered’ by Def Comedy and were able to tour off the strengths of their first season appearances. By the time many of them came back, they were far more competitive with each other. He talked about how the night his episode taped the comic that went out before him bombed and how comics backstage were taking great joy in watching this poor guy eaten alive by the unimpressed audience. All Bernie could think of was how hard it would be to get them back on his side. He was nervous and knocked off his game. When Martin Lawrence came out to introduce Bernie he took note of how unmoved the audience had been, remarking that he felt sorry for whoever was next before calling Bernie’s name. Bernie said it was almost too much to bear, so he went out onstage and told the audience exactly how he felt. “I ain’t scared of you muthafuckers.” He followed with a routine he had already set up with the DJ, Kid Capri, where Bernie would tell a series of quick jokes and after each punch line he’d yell “Kick it!” and the DJ would play the theme music. Bernie did everything as planned, except each time the music cut off he’d remind the audience “You don’t understand… I ain’t scared of you muthafuckers.” He was brash and unforgiving and outrageous and unafraid. He was the absolute truth, unadulterated. #GOLDENONE #RIGHTCHUZ #Yodie
