Disappointed to hear the Global Repertoire Database discussions seem to have fallen down. I don't know any details of the collapse, but the principle of the database makes a huge amount of sense to me.
Here's the PRS's statement about the collapse.
The advantages of having an API of accurate rightsholders information for any piece of music in the world would be extensive. Here's a few I can think of off the top of my head:
- People wishing to license music for their project - big or small. They could contact rightsholders easily and efficiently, and pay them for their work. Currently it's so difficult to find who owns rights, let alone contact them, that most people either go ahead and pirate the work or use something else. There is a lot of £££s in that long-tail I'm sure, but we're currently not set-up to realise it.
- Anti-piracy algorithms (e.g. YouTube Content ID or Soundcloud Content ID). If there was a central resource for copyright info that could be automatically called upon then all musicians and rightholders big or small could protect their works across the world. And platform companies wouldn't have an excuse for allowing piracy on their platforms.
- Tech developers / start-ups could build their apps using the GRD API and easily and cost-effectively build-in DMCA compliance to their new projects without the worry of lawsuits by the big rights-holders.
- A global marketplace for rights/music. Currently the music market is held back by territory rights. The internet is a global market place, the music industry needs to work on reflecting this and make the most of it. A Global Repertoire Database would help facilitate this.
