Protection Amulet ~ “Kila” or “Phurba” is a ritual dagger. This is not like an ordinary weapon, it is not about fighting, battering, subduing, subjagating or destroying something that we perceive as threatening. This is a ritual implement, a tool for our spiritual development. When we perceive things in our outer environment as harmful, from this spiritual perspective, we recognize that this is a reflection of the negativities, the “demons” or “poisons” within. This is a powerful method of spiritual alchemy in these dark times of great social and political conflict, and environmental destruction, a reflection of our own inner state. The three sides of the dagger represent the “three root poisons”. The blade comes down to a sharp, piercing point, representing the unyielding, relentless power of one pointed concentration,(meditation) that gives us the energy to root out the inner poisons in our midstream, transforming them into our path to realization of our inherent nature as enlightened mind. The transmutation of the “root three poisons” are; Anger (hate, pride aversion, fear) into Loving -Kindness and Compassion, Desire (greed, attachment, jealously) into Generosity, non-attachment, and Ignorance or the non-recognition of our own true nature, into Wisdom the recognition of our inherent awakened being, enlightenment. PROTECTION” ~ Prayers for the Warriors of Radical Selfless Compassion, is the wrathful aspect of the practices. To be of greatest benefit, to others, to the whole, first we must refine our own thoughts, speech and mind. The masculine symbol of the warrior is a fighter, a killer, a ruthless slayer. It is easy to get people to fight each other, to incite anger, hatred, fear, the idea that there is an enemy, someone “other” then self. It is more difficult to be a warrior that battles the “demons” within oneself. The Buddha said, “One who conquers oneself, is greater then one who conquers and army of 10,000” The prayers on the album, “PROTECTION” are an ancient method to support us to destroy our own negativites. As we purify our own heart-minds, our inherent compassion is revealed. We can then recognize the suffering we have created for ourselves and others by our inner enemies. Spiritual practice is not for the weak. It takes great strength, perseverance and effort. It is serious training, like an soldier. In these times where the darkness is so strong, these “wrathful” practices support us to “annihilate” our own obscurations in a swift and wrathful way. This is not the peaceful method, now is the time for the big guns. Offerings is a foundational practice in Vajrayana Buddhism. It develops our qualities of generosity and reduces our attachment. The practice of offering water bowls, is a physical practice developing our spiritual qualities of discipline, diligence, perserverance and generosity. It is done first in the morning before we eat, reaffirming our dedication to our vows of selflessness and to the service of others. All substances can be purified and offered. Offerings should be obtainable without any difficulty. Water is a naturally pure elemental substance, and is abundant in most areas, not requiring us to harm others to give it away. Without water there is no life. The practice of offering reduces our attachment and greed. When we have nothing to offer, we offer our prayers, and the aspiration to attaining awakening, utilizing the highest capacity of our mind, with the wish to benefit all. We can offer what we are most attached to, multiply it with visualization, and give it away. We can multiply and offer the entire universe.
