im grateful to you people who randomly helped me when i wanted to die so badly and you didnt even know me. thanks even if you dont see this my gratitude is floating around somewhere. thanks for making me at least halter in my steps, even if it didn’t change my mind for a long time even if i was stubborn in believing death was the only thing left, it did something to pause me for a moment in time...thanks...maybe i’ll make it to 100 years :P

Why is it so important to brand the movement? Like before one can have festivals and such? idk so much about it, but let' s say the Occupy movement was never branded used different logo's worldwide, but was successful. Isn't a festival or RL event a good way to raise funds anyways, with or without a clear brand identity?

Okay, while I’m one of the co-creators, I just want to let you know that this is a personal opinion. So, I want to say the professional answer first:

The reason why we’re raising funds at http://tremix.us/Blkfund is to “protect the movement from possible abuse.” 

Now, for a personal answer… (BTW, this answer was vetted by the team.)

There are three types of people in this world.

People with honor ( or Honorable)

People who are shameless (Shameless)

People who are ignorant.

People with honor are pretty respectable. They would follow the rules and play by the guidelines. 

For an example: They may say “Hey. Can I borrow your name? I want to have this party…” And we’ll ask questions to see if it falls in line with the principles of the guidelines set. If it’s a resounding yes, we can say “sure”. If “no”, then we would say “can you change a,b,c… otherwise, we can’t let you borrow the name, but you’re free to tag it something else.” 

We talked about it. We discussed. We compromised. That’s what honorable people do. 

Then we have people who are shameless. They have no respect for the traditions set or they decided to tip-toed to the edge of the guidelines and bend them.

Same example… let’s say we politely turned down the event. The honorable person would be like “this sucks, but I tried.” The shameless person would go “lemme use the name anyway”… and then, people hear about the party… and realized “wait… is this party suppose to be like this?” Then they would think “how can the people with the name just authorized this? This is bad.” Our official answer would be “we didn’t give them permission to hold such an event.” 

This is what shameless people do. Find loopholes and try to take advantage of a situation.

Now, the ignorant people in this context means “people who are not informed enough to make a decision to be either honorable or shameless.” It can also mean people who have “some information, but not ALL the information in order to make an informed decision”. 

Now… same example… they hear about the party… but don’t really know why the party is named that way. So, they ask around. Some ignorant people may find some honorable people who would say “hey, the originators didn’t authorize that party and here’s why.” While others would find the shameless people and they may provide either half-truth information or straight up lie. But most of the time, the ignorant people may find other ignorant people who may take guesses or may not take the time to become either an honorable person or a shameless person.

Then they go to the party… and didn’t have a good time. Now, because they are not experienced enough, they may say “we had a bad time at so and so’s party. We need to stay away from those type of parties in the future!” They may tell other people and they may spread that misinformation to others.

Thus lies an interesting conundrum… how do we protect ourselves so that the quality of the movement is preserved? Well, we can listen to the original people of such a movement, but there are people who are shameless and legally, we can’t do anything other than shame the shameless. And that’s not going to work. 

Now, if we have legal paperwork standing in place, we are able to take action.

We want to take action against the shameless, while educating the ignorant and protecting the honorable. 

So… if this is all we really want to do… why are we doing something that most movements don’t have to?

Because it’s profitable! A positive movement = money!

There are potential marketing opportunities and there will be companies that want to “shamelessly” promote. It’s a positive movement and people see $$$ with this movement. 

Now guess what? We want to say…

“Yo, this is our idea! We forbid you from using this idea in such a way!” Their current answer if they are shameless people? “You and what army?”

That’s why. We don’t have an army. We’re just three people with an idea. We have an army of people who wants to protect the idea. But we’re a toothless army. We can tell people “protest this company”… but guess what? The ignorant will confuse things, and we won’t be able to educate them… and why? They won’t believe us unless we can prove beyond the shadow of a doubt that we are the originators. And that’s the problem.

And that’s why we have to brand it. Not because we want to make money from it and profit... but to make sure that our time invested isn’t wasted because of the shameless.

ok for pleaseleavemyblogalone and rikaorlanda and curious passersby this is what i did i walked down sixth ave w my friend and we wore trash bags because there were no more emergency rain ponchos and i put my arms in the trash bag corners and smiled and waved with both hands at randomly chosen strangers and most of them thought i was weird as fuck but some of them smiled :-) i did this on the 7 train too it’s so easy to make a stranger happy in passing :-)
