you felt a bittersweet flavor dancing on your tongue ever since you woke up.ย
the fairy lights festival has always been your favorite day of the year. a summer town fair where the close knit community of your town celebrated together for no apparent reason; filling the park with lights and laughter. and it was even more exciting now that you had gotten the chance to show the video you had been working on for the entire summer.
still, your normally untainted happiness was stained by the knowledge that this was your last day as rikuโs fake girlfriend. it was for the best, of course, but that didnโt mean it wouldnt absolutely suck to say goodbye to all the excuses you had used to get just a little closer to him.
between the screening and the โbreak upโ, your anxiety was hitting a new all time high, and by the way you declined all the food the boy offered you, riku had noticed.
โynnie, you have to eat something,โ he said, approaching a spoonful of the food he was eating to your lips.
โdonโt wanna, iโm kinda nauseous,โ you mused, shrugging your nose in discomfort as you dodged the spoon, urging him to eat its contents instead. riku watched you intently, noting the way you fiddled with your rings as you looked around at the amount of people that walked around the park. they would all be watching something you had created, and it was terrifying.
โweโll go eat something after,โ he muttered, gently moving his hand to grab yours, interlacing your fingers in a reassuring gesture. he tried his best not to show how much it hurt him to know that it would probably be the last meal youโd have while being in the relationship you had created over the past few days. โdeal?โ
your nerves calmed a little at the touch of his hand, and your eyes looked for his immediately. something about his dark orbs always did the trick in making you believe that everything would be okay. โyeah, okay.โ
riku squeezed your hand gently, giving you a smile before speaking. โnow, would you do me the honours of coming to enjoy the fair with me before your big moment?โ
a small chuckle escaped your lips involuntarily as you nodded, squeezing his hand right back before starting to walk, leading him through the fair. โwhere to first?โ
โi know you love the ring toss, so letโs go,โ he smiled, leading the way there. it was hard to suppress the heat that pooled at your chest when you realized he knew such a small detail. it was weird, knowing that he noticed stuff like that even though you had never been close before that summer.
โiโm gonna win you something, which one do you like?โ you asked once you had arrived and paid the fee to play, watching him scan the prizes intently before pointing at the big stuffed cat on the top corner of the booth. โof course thatโs what you like,โ you scoffed, rolling your eyes with amusement before locking in for the game.
riku watched you with a ridiculous amount of endearment painted on his face. he was so in trance by you that he didnโt even notice that the game was over until he saw you approach him with the giant stuffed cat he had pointed at earlier.
โtada!โ you smiled, childishly proud of the prize you had won for him. โthis is for you, my love,โ you said, your tone clearly full of amusement.
โthank you, baby,โ he said with the same tone, holding the plushy close to his chest before leaning in to kiss your forehead. โnow where should we go?โ
after about an hour of walking around the fair, joking with your friends and wasting money in rigged games, it was almost time for the moment you had been waiting for so eagerly. anxiety was beginning to creep its way back into your chest when riku pinched your side to get your attention from where your brother dramatically recounted how he had beaten sion at a game of cornhole.ย
โhey,โ he called out gently, waiting for you to look at him before speaking again. โi think we have time to go to the ferris wheel before the video, wanna go?โ
now, you knew it was probably not the best idea to accept an invitation to the most romantic attraction from your fake boyfriend who you had recently discovered your very much non platonic love for, but how could you ever say no to him?
โyeah, letโs go,โ and so you excused yourself from your friends and headed to the attraction, luckily getting the last available booth for the round. โyou know, iโve never been a big fan of the ferris wheel.โ you muttered once it began moving, your eyes focusing on the sky in front of you.
โyeah? how come?โ he asked, and you could notice that his eyes were focused on your profile instead.
โi donโt know, i just like other attractions better,โ you shrugged before moving your gaze back to his. โi think iโll like it more now though.โ
riku let go of a shallow breath, his eyes quickly scanning your face before focusing back on your orbs. โwhy is that?โ
โbecause iโm here with you, and i like it,โ you said, a weak smile forming on your lips.
riku felt his heart skip several beats at your words, and god did he want to kiss you. instead, he intertwined your fingers again and looked ahead of him. โiโll come with you every year if you want me to.โ and he hoped you didnโt hear his heart scream that he would go anywhere if it was with you.
โpromise?โ you asked, voice small as you extended the pinky of your free hand towards him.
โpromise,โ he assured, lacing his finger with you and squeezing lightly.
โyou canโt break pinky promises, you know,โ you smiled, letting go of his pinky before moving to rest your head against his shoulder. โyouโre stuck with me now.โ
โthereโs nowhere i rather be,โ and with that, a comfortable silence settled over you, and unknowingly to each other, you both allowed yourselves to pretend it wasnโt fake for a couple more minutes.
everything good has to end at some point though, and you now found yourself nervously standing in the middle of the makeshift stage where your video would be projected for everyone to watch.
โhi there,โ you spoke nervously into the mic, looking over at the crowd. โi know you all probably know me, but im yn fujinaga. uhm, i spent the summer creating this video for a uni project, and iโm very happy to be able to share it with you tonight. this video was supposed to be a documentary on the skating culture of our town, but i guess it turned into something a little different.โ you exhaled a shallow breath, scanning the crowd until your eyes settled on riku. โthe star of the show is someone i hold very dearly to my heart, and i know you probably do too. iโve grown up hearing only amazing things about maeda riku, and iโm glad to tell you that i have a million things of my own to say. but anyways, i hope you all enjoy the video.โ with one last smile, you climbed off the stage between applauses and took your seat next to riku.
the boy didnโt waste time before wrapping his arm around your shoulder, pressing a long kiss to your temple before whispering directly into your ear. โthere wasnโt any need to call me out like that, you know?โ
โshh, its starting,โ you teased, pushing his side softly as the video started playing on the makeshift screen.
the video started with the first ever footage you shot of riku, his camera shy demeanor and charming smile. progressively, it shifted to him skating; an amazing montage of beautifully skilled tricks and riku in his most natural habitat. as the video went along, riku felt his heart overflowing with love. because he had expected more of his skating, not all the in between moments of him helping a little kid to skate, or him walking over with arms full of snacks for the both of you.
it was weird to watch himself on the screen, but something clicked somewhere along it. he was watching himself through your eyes, and it was the only time he understood how anyone could ever care so deeply for him. the video was so full of love that he couldn't understand how you couldnโt be. so he looked at you instead. the way your eyes glistened as videos of him you probably had seen a million times played, your smile, your dilated pupils.
oh.
maybe he wasnโt alone.
and at the moment that the video ended and you immediately looked at him as if you hadnโt stared at practically ten minutes of his face, he knew he wasnโt the only one that felt a little too much. so he cupped your face and brought you close, clashing your lips together in the gentlest of kisses.

basketball wasnโt your sport, it never had been.
but everything was fun with the right company, clearly, because you had never enjoyed watching a sports game more than the one you got into with the first success in minjaeโs life. it was euphoric, hilarious and exciting to watch the men bounce the basketball around in tactics you didnโt understand in the slightest, and it was even better with riku by your side.
ever since the dinner at his house, things had gone a little differently than normal for both of you. you were more comfortable with each other than before, more familiar. so you sat a little closer to him than you normally would, letting your legs graze with his when he didnโt pull away. he even hugged you when the team you had chosen to support scored a point, smacking a kiss to the side of your head in celebration.
everything was too good to be true, and the world very clearly hated to see you in peace.
you were sitting back on the seat, rikuโs arm thrown around you casually as you watched the game. well, you were really watching him as he told you a story about his one and only attempt to play basketball; far too mesmerized with his pretty smile to notice the commotion around you.
you were pulled back into reality when sakuya shook your arm, too consumed by his own laughing to get anything out apart from pointing to the screen. when you looked in that direction, your eyes widened exaggeratedly at the sight of your own reflection encapsulated in a heart with riku.
you looked back at him immediately, finding him already looking at you with a shy smile. you had never kissed before, it was never necessary. it wasnโt even necessary then. but then his eyes travelled down to your lips and his tongue swept over his own in a swift movement, and you couldnโt resist.
what was one kiss, anyways?
you leaned in, giving him a reassuring smile as a sign to follow your lead. the way his smile morphed into a smirk as his hand moved to cup the side of your jaw before he pulled you in was your last straw, and you couldnโt even deny the butterflies that erupted in your stomach. his lips were suddenly on yours, staying still for a millisecond as if giving you time to back away before they moved; gently, tentatively. when you kissed him back, the world felt like it exploded.
he had never, not once in his life, experienced anything even close to how majestic it felt to kiss you. your lips were soft, perfectly plump against his own, like they were meant to fit together like a puzzle. his grip on your jaw moved back to your neck, firmly holding you still as he pushed a little further into the kiss, deepening it. you smiled against his lips, moving along with him and tilting your head to give him access.
if you had been more conscious about what was happening you wouldโve moved back, retracted before positively ruining everything you had built with riku - and before making out with your brotherโs friend right in front of him, too. but it felt right to kiss him, so you let him do it until sakuyaโs voice broke your bubble.
โmy eyes! oh my god, my eyes!โ he screeched, making riku giggle against your lips adorably and part away from you.
โoh, shut up!โ you laughed, parting away and pushing sakuyaโs head back with amusement. you plopped back on your chair again, sinking into it as the fact that you had just kissed riku in front of everyone and their mothers at a televised event.
riku couldnโt help the stupid smile that haunted his lips as he laid back on his own chair, looking at you with something anyone could only categorize as sheer adoration. his arm made its way back around you as he leaned in to whisper into your ear. โsorry about that.โ
โno worries,โ you chuckled, looking down at your hands with a dumb smile.
