The Stone That The Builder Refused...
No review or anything today, just expressing some joy: the Boondocks is back, baby!
It’s in production, new reboot of the series, with McGruder at the helm. It’s happening.
This had got me serious jazzed up. The Boondocks comic was one of the things I was deep into growing up, and I still reread it all the time (no small thanks to Huey Freeman Speaks The Truth and other blogs for helping me do that). The show was amazing, though past the first season (which was phenomenal) not quite as great as the comic imo, and in the final season without McGruder everything that was problematic about it expanded into a complete mess. It’s not the Boondocks without McGruder: other creators just don’t get the conceit of his series the way he does. Now that he’s back, I’m so totally down.
My immediate wish is that, now that it’s a reboot and not a continuation, we can get away from the “Huey sighs as his family gets into wacky racial hijinks” idea and back into him as a protagonist, more of Riley and Grandad actually having layers, more of facing the hilarious (if depressing) stupidity of the world and hopefully coming out wiser, and funnier. And also, on that note, get Michael Caesar. Caesar's like the best character in the strip and he got screwed over bad by the old show.
But that’s beside the point. What is the point? Well, to quote my favorite Boondocks comic of all time, posted above: it’s time to put a foot to the behind of another year! And this year sorely needs it.
