Maestro Helmuth Rilling

“La música nunca debe ser cómoda, nunca fosilizada, nunca calmante. Debe sorprender al oyente, llegarle muy dentro, obligarlo a reflexionar”. Este es el credo personal de Helmuth Rilling, reconocido director, pedagogo y estudioso de la música de Bach, quien en 1954 fundó el coro Gächinger Kantorei y luego su contraparte orquestal, el Bach-Collegium Stuttgart. Asimismo, es un ferviente defensor de la música contemporánea y de la música coral romántica, repertorio este último que ha rescatado del olvido.

Como director invitado o con sus propios conjuntos, recorre habitualmente Europa, Estados Unidos y Canadá. Hace más de 30 años mantiene una colaboración especial con la Filarmónica de Israel y en años recientes también ha hecho giras por Suramérica y China con sus grupos.

El maestro Rilling es director artístico del prestigioso Festival Bach de Oregón y en 1981 creó la Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart, fundación dedicada a divulgar la obra de Bach y a educar mediante conciertos, clases magistrales, simposios y programas para niños. Trabajar con músicos jóvenes siempre ha sido uno de sus intereses centrales y a través de sus Academias Bach ofrece talleres para estudiantes en todo el mundo.

De su incansable trabajo son testimonio sus cientos de producciones en CD, radio y televisión. En el 2000, al cumplirse 250 años de la muerte de Bach, capitaneó el titánico proyecto de la Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart de grabar toda la obra de Bach en 172 CD. Entre sus discos recientes se destacan también obras de Haydn, Handel, Gubaidulina, Britten y Honegger.

Helmuth Rilling recibió el Premio Internacional de la UNESCO (1994) y el Premio Theodor Heuss (1995) por su compromiso con la paz y la democracia. En el 2000 obtuvo un Grammy por su grabación del Credo de Penderecki y en 2003 fue nombrado miembro honorario de la American Academy of the Arts & Sciences. En 2011 recibió el prestigioso galardón Herbert von Karajan por su contribución al mundo de la música y en 2013 el ECHO Klassik de la Academia Alemana del Disco por sus trayectoria artística.

It should startle people and reach deep down inside them, forcing them to reflect.” This is the personal creed of Helmuth Rilling, world-acclaimed conductor, pedagogue, and Bach scholar. In 1954 he founded the internationally recognized Gächinger Kantorei choir and years later its orchestral partner, the Bach Collegium Stuttgart. He has both fervently advocated neglected choral music of the Romantic period and promoted contemporary music by regularly commissioning and performing pieces by key composers of our time.

Helmuth Rilling has toured across Europe, the United States, Canada, South America, and China either as guest conductor or with his own ensembles. Also, over the last 30 years, a special friendship has developed with the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra.

Maestro Riling is artistic director of the prestigious Oregon Bach Festival, and in 1981 he established the Internationale Bachakademie Stuttgart, a foundation focused on the promotion of Bach’s music that also devotes considerable resources to education and outreach through concerts, master classes, symposia, and children’s programs. Working with young musicians has always been a central focus of Rilling’s work, and through a worldwide network of Bach Academies, he offers workshops for students across the globe.

Helmuth Rilling’s inexhaustible, creative activity is documented in hundreds of CD, radio and television productions. He was the initiator of the International Bachakademie’s critically acclaimed project to record Bach’s complete works, released on 172 CDs during the Bach anniversary year in 2000. Recent recordings include works by Haydn, Händel, Gubaidulina, Britten, and Honegger.

Helmuth Rilling received the UNESCO International Music Prize in 1994 and the Theodor Heuss Deeds of Reconciliation prize the following year for his commitment to peace and democracy. In 2000 he won the Grammy Award for his recording of Krzysztof Penderecki´s Credo, and in 2003 he became an Honorary Member of the American Academy of the Arts and Sciences. In 2011 he received the prestigious Herbert von Karajan Prize for his contributions to the world of music, and in 2013 the ECHO Klassik live achievement award from the German Recording Academy.
