Rina Decker, Walking Shadows
Mercedes Coffin by Faye Kellerman
In this newest, one of many Peter Decker novels, Peter is given the task of solving a fifteen year cold case involving the body of a much-loved high school history teacher murdered and found in the trunk of a his Mercedes automobile. It is brought to the forefront of cases because a current crime has the same m.o. The current murder involves a music producer who would have been a student at the high school of where the history teacher taught. When the music producer is killed in much the same way as Mr. Little, the history teacher, Genoa Greeves steps in and offers a substantial reward for the police department to reopen and solve Bennett Little's murder. After putting many scenarios together and connecting many dots that "coincidentally" connected the past murder to the current murder, Decker is able to solve not one, but two murders with one blow, which then results in the department receiving a new, state of the art computer system compliments of Ms. Greeves.
Peter Decker and Rina Lazarus series by Faye Kellerman
Man I love this book series, its a detective crime novel and I will admit the book can be pretty heavy.
The main characters and devout jews, and this sometimes makes the reading hard work as it specifically focus' on religion and its importance.
However, religion is the ongoing back story its the gruesome murders I enjoy. Kellerman creates a world that you are sucked into and can't until the final pages of the book work out 'who dun' it'.
The series spans about twenty books, these books spanning over 17 years so obviously the plot and characters evolve.
My favourite character of the series is most likely Scott Oliver, he's introduced as a sexist pig but it's all a front and he becomes more likeable as the series progress'. In the first book I ever read from the series 'Stalker' he was one of the main characters and was pretty crucial to the plot.
I love Scotty, I really do. He's an honest guy who came from bent surroundings. But he doesn't have the arrogance that Decker (main guy) sometimes has. Not to mention he has a sense of humour.
The next character is Marge Dunn, she is Deckers long term sidekick on the force, and agrees with him a lot. She eventually partners with Oliver and they make a nice crime fighting duo.
Rina, Rina is an irritating character. Mainly as she is so devout and when she's around the story is centred around religion (yawn). She is likeable I suppose. In her own way and she takes a lot of shit- I'd tell Decker to fuck off.
Then you have his kids, Cindy is my favourite. She is also a police officer and is the main character in 'stalker' (best book ever.)
Then you have the two boys, Jacob and Samuel who aren't main characters. Then the baby Hannah, who is at current date in college.
My new fav is Gabe Whitman, son of a mob man from an earlier book and taken in by the deckers. He takes no shit from anyone.
My only issue is there is no atheist in the series, everyone is religious. Gets a little grating after a while. The books are great as part of the series and as stand alones.
