theory about nica and ring

So it's pretty clear that Nica and Ring were experimented on in some form when they were children (flashback in Roger's route, Ring explains a bit of how they grew up in the Daily Records event with him and Ellis)

They also supposedly have the same curse, though from Roger's route we know this shouldn't happen, as his research finds that it is impossible to have two people bear the same curse at the same time. A curse passes on to another person when its original bearer dies.

Also, their powers are apparently different, even though their curse is the same: Nica says his power is to make anyone he holds hands with feel attracted to him, while Ring says his power is to make anyone he holds hands with feel joy.

And Nica has a flashback in the 2025 election story when Elbert steps on his shadow, where he says something like "I'm the only one who..."

The theory: Nica and Ring were subject to experiments as children to try and make the same curse manifest in multiple people at once. To do this, one of them was 'killed' (had their heart stop) and then resuscitated after some time, to try and get the curse to pass on.

I think Nica's flashback via Elbert's ability was probably of this moment. He might have wanted to say something like "I'm the only one who should have this curse" because he didn't want to die, or he didn't want to make Ring watch him die?

Or is it Ring that has the curse, and was then killed, and Nica was like "I'm the only one who should suffer?" as he was watching Ring be killed? As a child, he was the one who always tried to give Ring a portion of his own bread rations when they were being starved as children.

And I wonder if their powers are actually the same? It could be something like "make people feel what they want to feel": Nica wants to be loved, Ring wants to be happy?

I was going to say that giving Ring a 1/5 in intelligence was harsh, but then I remembered that one event story where Ring got flustered after being stuck in a shed with Kate and accidentally touching her boobs. Ring's conclusion?

"She has an ability that makes her smell nice and can take control of your heartbeat and make it go so fast you might die!! She's too damgerous for Darius or Nica to get close to so I have to keep watching her to make sure she doesn't do anything!!!!"
