What: Preaster grocery shopping

It is hard to just listen to Ring of Saturn without feeling compelled to move. I had forgotten just how compelling beats at 165+ BPM can be but this one puts me on my feet or pressing down the street with the windows rolled down. This one goes a lot darker than Timeless with a lot heavier hitting bass carrying on with sound effects and drums sprinkled through. It all hits the right buttons for me but nothing really jumps off the page.

I realized a couple things after finishing Ring of Saturn. One, I skipped Goldie’s most controversial album, Saturnz Return, because it wasn’t on Spotify and it is out of order on the discogs page. Two, I am guessing that I only ever listened to Saturnz Return when I was forming an opinion about Goldie all those years ago because he makes plenty of nasty stuff along with the rest of his ilk like Dillinja who produced one of my all-time favorite DnB tunes, Nasty Ways. What I am appreciating is the ability to let a bass part just ride and allow for the call and response to develop with minor variations throughout the song. I find that with most non-dubstep EDM (dirty word) that is coming out these days, there is this reluctance to just showcase bass, like it should be used so sparingly. I feel like a brute for wanting it to just crush on for a solid minute or two and leave it to the percussion to jump around all over on top of the bed that is laid so carefully.

The sad thing to me is that drum n bass doesn’t feel like it has really evolved much since the days of where techstep had gone by the early 2k. I don’t think the same can be said for techno or tech house but I may just be closer to it. The biggest asset of drum n bass is its downfall, namely the manic speed and aggression that can only go so far before spinning into absurdity. The only thing for it to do is splinter off into dubstep variations with less rigorous demands on percentage of track space filled with constant beat. Of course there are all kinds of jazz variations that can be done with the durm n bass cadence but I am going to ignore those and shovel them into the alt jazz box. 

The good news is that Saturnz Return sounds like a challenge and something I will want to take some time concentrating on. Things move fast so forcing myelf to take the time out for it is good. I will try and meditate on my desire for the crushing bass met with the need for silence and calm. Can there be bass without silence? If bass in the middle of a forest and no one is there to feel it did the trees move?
