Ocean of Life

"The fact that you are braver than anyone else."

He no longer feels the intense heat that he once did, now, it is only the cool run of water over his barren skin. "Why?" He wonders, "Am I alive?" The boy opens his mouth to breath, but it's not air that fills his lungs. He emerges from the water and spits out the salty liquid, choking and gasping for air. Armin brushes his hair from his eyes and time is at a stand-still. Salt? He takes some in his hands and watches the mesmerizing sea flow through the gaps between his fingers. As he is transfixed on the depth of pure blue ebbing and flowing all around him, an abrupt cry comes echoing from the wide shoreline he hadn't even noticed.

He turns his head in shock and sees a young girl with strawberry-blonde hair come bounding through the water. She flails her limbs about her, kicking up water. She is laughing, a deep belly laugh that is derived from her very core. Behind her, more and more people dot the shoreline like stars in the night sky.

"Where..." He doesn't finish the question; he knows where this place is once he sees not only her face but all the faces of the people around him.

Before another thought could even enter his mind, he is sprinting. His legs are much too heavy going through the water. The girl he had originally seen was now laughing among a group of friends. It's mostly made up of Levi's squad with a few stragglers here and there. A fiery redhead with bright green eyes seemed to be telling the group an enticing story. Words jump out like "underground" and "military police" but Armin continued to walk through the water and onto the shore where a group of different people mingled with one another. There were some people he knew, some he knew of, some he only knew their faces, others he had never seen until now.

He is lost in the tide of their presence.

A youthful man with greased back hair is sitting next to a smaller blond, both chatting aimlessly and staring at the water.

Children build art from wet sand.

Marco talks with what looks like relatives of his.

People strum on seemingly random instruments.

Mike dances with a young person, that you couldn't quite tell whether or not it was a man or a woman but it didn't quite seem to matter.

Bodies that he had once seen splayed out in front of him, covered in blood and torn apart in a massacre of anguish, were now dancing and singing and playing and talking with more life than he had ever seen in all his years inside or outside the walls.

Everyone is happy.

And for once, he truly feels alive.
