Healthcare was weird in the homeland too.
Our government subsidizes healthcare for everyone BECAUSE we had so many undocumented immigrant workers that the country would collapse if they weren't able to get healthcare. You don't need insurance to stay alive, because the medicine didn't cost hundreds per perscription. There was an invoice that went viral some time ago, for a man who had a hip replacement without insurance at a govt hospital, RM 25 (USD 6 and some change) is what he paid for it.
It helps private healthcare too. The clinic I used to go to was VERY rich, glittering tiles on the floor of the reception area and marble counters rich. One man's private practice. To one side there was a counter to pick up and fill out insurance forms for the most common companies, there were no receptionists there because there didn't need to be. Out of pocket medication provided by the clinic was the same everywhere else, didn't cost exorbitant amounts of money. Because the subsidies meant they could focus on really efficiently getting patients looked after (for a clinic, which also does a bunch of testing on the side).
The first job I had was to write ad copy for big companies. We were trying to sell American hospitals on our client's enterprise program. I learned a lot about the Obama administration's push towards modernization, and how that fucked over records sharing and consolidation between hospitals. The company didn't give me a reason for firing me but it did happen after I brought up how much hospitals simply cannot afford the manpower to make sweeping enterprise system changes.
I thought my hubby was being unreasonably antsy about not seeing doctors when I got here. I lost a friend who was barely 22 my second year of studies bc he caught meningitis, refused to see a doc due to having no insurance, and died overnight. I don't think I've ever really gotten over that. Ppl in my life just wanted to move on from it and I didn't bring it up again bc there was so little sympathy for the situation among my family and his friends.
I have comparatively amazing insurance coverage due to my job, and I have the lowest "tier" of insurance offered. It really put things into perspective when I discovered my insurance gives me better benefits than the "premium" one my father in law JUST got after like, what, 30 years working as a mover? I should make more use of those benefits, but the most persistently pressing issue I have and cannot do anything about rn: ADHD diagnosis and therapy and medication isn't covered by my insurance. Adult ADHD diagnoses are so expensive out of pocket and it's not even guaranteed they'd say "yea you have it" anyways and you forfeit that fee either way. That's a lot of barriers and paperwork and what have you for someone who, even allegedly, has I Cannot Focus Condition.
idk where I'm really going with this, and my homeland has so many issues outside of healthcare too. We're not any less racist for it, in fact, I really don't suggest minorities especially Black people visit, outside the main city and big tourist spots. But like... you're telling me the country that has task forces solely for hunting down ppl and content suspected of being queer has better healthcare than a first world country? And yet the people who live here get really fucking high and mighty about being a first world country. Idk man?
