Starsky and hutch sketches
TNG, Season 6, Episode 18, "Starship Mine".
Terrorists seize the Enterprise-D for some stupid reason, Picard gets captured, whatever, who cares.
I want to talk about Hutch.
He is played up as this super-annoying guy who "talks about nothing" all the time, to such an extreme that even this episode's Butt Head Aliens hate him. Worf and Geordi both try to get out of hanging out with him. Picard only gets captured as part of some ploy to avoid him. He also tells Data to learn small talk from him, which leads to Data mimicking him, which Riker and Crusher find so funny, Riker introduces Data to Hutch and then they stand there at a distance, making fun of both of them.
Here's the thing - Hutch did nothing wrong.
You horrible space nerds. This guy is warm and funny and friendly, he has a million stories, he knows everyone, and trivia about tons of planets and species, and he nonchalantly tells you where cool horseback-riding trails are.
This guy is fascinating and awesome! This is 100% the best guy at any party! I guess they cast this badly, because Hutch isn't remotely annoying. He seems like a fun, fascinating guy, who you could talk to about anything, forever. Who the hell hates that!?
"It's all small talk." "He talks about nothing." Oh sorry, important Galaxy-class crew, that Hutch doesn't talk about the one specific thing each one of you specifically cares about. GOD FORBID anyone engage you people on a sub-doctorate level conversation about alien weather or funny ancedotes about people you don't know personally.
I swear to god..
SORRY, Riker, that he got in the way of you finding yet another woman with low standards to have a meaningless one-night-stand with.
SORRY, Beverly, that someone expected you to engage with a conversation not about obscure alien diarrhea for 10 minutes.
SORRY, Geordi, that the captain made you be nice to a guy you don't know, instead of you being creepy and then striking out with a woman you've been feeding drinks to all evening.
Hutch is by far the most emotionally well-balanced and interesting person in this room! If you actually listened to his conversation where Data was innocently copying him, you'd learn a hundred different interesting things!
Leave Hutch alone, you jerks. He's better than all of you!
Update: ...You guys are not going to believe this.
