14 years ago today, the music world was forever changed when a nut opened fire at a Damageplan concert in Ohio, killing one of the greatest metal guitarists of all-time, Dimebag Darrell Abbott. . The shooter also took out three other people, often forgotten: Jeff “Mayhem” Thompson (head of security), Erin Halk (an employee of the club) and Nathan Bray (a fan). . Most anniversaries of such things tend to come and go, but this one really sticks - as if that December night in 2004 was a real turning point in America. . This autographed photo hangs in my office next to one of Dime’s signature guitars and a set of dog tags. I’d met Dime on several occasions, but the photo comes from my days working for the Musicland Group/Sam Goody, from an era where we were helping launch a new line of Washburn guitars and accessories that were Dime-branded. In 2003, Dime joined the Sam Goody crew for an epic party in Las Vegas. I clearly remember him calling me “Jim” in his very distinctive southern voice, telling me all about his new band, “New Found Power.” They’d later become Damageplan and use NFP as the title of their only album. .
