"Se encontrarmos uma resposta para isso [a existência do Universo], será o maior triunfo da razão humana, porque conheceríamos a mente de Deus" Stephen Hawking no livro Uma Breve História do Tempo (1988) "Seria trágico se não fosse cômico" #ripstevenhawking
I morn today, not only because we lost a brilliant scientific mind, but we lost an outstanding disabled man. So the fact that people are being extremely ableist about Steven Hawking is no surprise. A great disabled man, who had a voice and was not afraid to use it. But his accomplishments are somehow lessened by the fact that he is disabled. Steven Hawking did not overcome his disability. He overcame ableist attitudes, he overcame societies preconceived notion of what being disabled means. He was a brilliant scientist, who gave a voice to so many. Letting other disabled people have hope, be accepted. He had a unique way of viewing the universe. People should not ignore a part of him because it makes them uncomfortable. Being different is okay. There is nothing wrong with being different. Nor should they say he succeeded despite his disability. He was not a perfect man. He had faults, he was real, in a way disabled people are often not allowed to be.
I hope Professor Hawkins is out roaming the cosmos now, not tied down to his body or the chains that society placed on him. I commend certain places for the way they talk about Steven Hawkins, and I shame others, who were quick to say “despite/in spite of his disabilities”. Society has a problem with the way we talk about disabilities. Steven Hawkins was disabled. Disabled people are allowed to exist and when they accomplish something, it not in spite of their disabilities. Saying so belittles our experiences and the hard work it took for us to accomplish it. Please go forward, watching what you say. Disabled people do not exist to be your inspiration porn. They are real people. All they ask for to get treated as such them, and from you to have the decency to respect them when they die, and do not erase a part of them. Thank you Steven Hawking, may you find all your answers in your next life.
