Mel - his hairstyle backstory and siblings (DM AU change descr.):
I was remaking my former headcanon/AU fact/theory (whatever you wanna call it) about Mel and his haircut yesterday and this is what I got to (including how and from what I changed that):
My original idea (scrapped after discovering point 3 and the movie scene problem that are on my chart):
Mel is Stuart’s oldest brother (and an older brother of other one-eyed minions with combed hair).
When still being in his aquatic form, he accidentally bumped into a rock, damaging his head - even though he healed himself (thanks to his minion’s good healing), the accident resulted in his hair getting down to the sides of his head. This also meant he had this haircut from the start and Gru only knew him as the half-bald minion.
My second idea (made after discovering point 3 and the movie scene problem that are on my chart; eventually was also scrapped):
Mel is Lance’s older brother (and other one-eyed minions with spiky hair) - for those who don’t know, Lance is a one-eyed minion with spiky hair who appeared in DM 2 and Gru even directly addressed him.
He was among the minions with a classic spiky haircut until an incident when a big amount of iron bars, bricks and shattered glass fell on his head and injured him - even though his scars healed, his hair stopped growing, except for one line around his head. This line thickened over time because the nutritions were now centralized into a smaller number of hair strands.
During time he was recovering, not only he received his iconic cap (although the letters forming “I love GRU” was sewed by Mel himself later), but because Gru was the one taking care of the injured minion, taking him to his office, giving him work that wouldn’t be that exhausting and overall spending a lot of time with him, Mel became very clingy to his boss, which is why he felt so betrayed when Gru refused to be a villain again.
My final headcanon/changes for the AU (will be used in my AU from now on):
This final one is mix of both and makes changes in canon movies (mainly because they already tended to contradict themselves, so…):
Mel is Stuart’s oldest brother (and an older brother of other one-eyed minions with combed hair).
He has been a regular, one-eyed minion with a combed haircut for a long time, until the incident when a big amount of iron bars, bricks and shattered glass fell on his head and injured him. His scars healed, but the injury caused his hair to change its growing place to that half-bald almost-circle he is known for nowadays. This event happened in Gru's 30s, before DM1 and Mel wasn’t in the scenes mainly because he was hiding in Gru's office or somewhere in the lab.
Like in the second idea, Mel received his iconic cap (although the letters forming “I love GRU” was sewed by Mel himself later) during time of the recovery + he became very clingy to his boss due to Gru taking care of him.
