Summary:

“Are you guys taking a couples trip the month before your wedding?” Kerry demands. “Honeymoons normally come after you get married, just in case you forgot.”

risingluna au where miles is the script writer for the movie jon's directing

miles has written a few scripts before, okay, he’s no slouch, but this one is his baby. this is the one he’s lost the most sleep over editing and re-editing and tweaking. (this is the one that kerry and gray have lost the most sleep over, when he asked them for their opinions, which is proof that his friends are the best, but that’s not the point.) this movie - his first feature-length movie - is near and dear to his heart and he’s not going to let just anyone work on it.

barbara, who has acted in one or two of miles’s short films before, mentions offhand that she knows a director who she thinks miles would get along with. miles is a little wary just on principle but what barb has failed to mention is that the guy is a) her old college roommate, b) pretty fucking cute, and c) the director of one of miles’s favorite short films that was, in his opinion, snubbed at the oscars. (”it wasn’t even nominated,” barbara says. miles shakes his head. “my point exactly.”)

so miles isn’t going to trust just anyone with his baby, but it turns out jon isn’t just anyone. they meet for coffee, about a week after miles emails jon the script and manages to keep his gushing to a minimum (although at one point jon emails “i didn’t realize you wrote that one role for babs, that was an amazing film” and miles kind of feels like exploding) and as soon as they’re sat down with their drinks jon reaches into his bag and pulls out a hard copy and says “okay, walk me through it.”

jon, miles learns, is very intense when it comes to… almost everything, really. he’s not serious, per se, but when he’s focused he’s completely focused. they go over the script for four hours, and their drinks go cold, and miles doesn’t notice because it turns out that this man is a genius, and also that he and miles are incredibly creatively compatible. miles agrees with ninety percent of the suggestions jon makes and argues his case extremely well for the other ten, and when they meet up two weeks later with their second drafts the script is a lot stronger and clearer than it was before.

strangely enough that’s not when miles starts developing feelings for jon. he maintains a cheerful, totally normal level of friendship through all of the editing and pre-production and casting, and even most of the filming. they get good actors, they get decent sets (even if they do have to film some scenes in barb’s apartment) and kerry and gray shoulder a lot of the work, too. for all that they’re trying hard it’s still closer to the “amateur indie” end of the spectrum, but jon keeps saying they can fix that in the editing.

miles is on set about two thirds of the days they’re filming, but he doesn’t get to see the movie until he and jon (and, to an extent, kerry and gray, and josh and kyle) sit down and enter editing hell. and it’s at that point that he discovers that jon has made this movie beautiful. not just well-shot, not just well-composed, but every single scene seems, to miles’s relatively untrained eye, balanced and well-lit and well-colored and, okay, miles falls in love with jon’s artistic vision before he falls in love with jon, but can you blame him, it’s such a pretty movie!

the editors do a lot of the heavy lifting, but jon invites miles to sit with him as they go through, shot by shot, and make sure everything is how miles wants it. and, well, that’s a lot of time to spend together, not that the last few months haven’t already been a lot of time, and one day jon shows up two minutes late but he has miles’s coffee with him, exactly the way miles likes it.

miles is a little distracted when they start editing, but seriously, the only two people who can get his coffee exactly right are kyle (because he was there the time miles discovered it was the perfect balance of coffee and sugar) and kerry and gray (who count as one person because they can only get it right if they’re together, because kerry always fucks up the size and gray always fucks up the number of sugars) and now, apparently, jon. he’s allowed to be distracted.

and from there miles falls so fast it feels like he’s skydiving, because jon takes his breath away and makes his stomach swoop, and he doesn’t know what landing is going to feel like but he’s pretty sure he’s ready for impact. because jon is pretty and smart and brilliant, and he doesn’t know that the movie is based on some bullshit conversation he and kerry and kyle all had while they were drunk and someone had the foresight to write down, he doesn’t know that this script means worlds to miles but he treated it like it means worlds to him, and that means something, doesn’t it?

the tipping point goes like this:

they finish the edits sometime between midnight and dawn in miles’s apartment, they send the film off to a local film festival (if they’re lucky they’ll be accepted, if they’re really lucky someone important will like it) and as soon as the last email is sent jon stretches in his chair and looks at miles and says “so this is a little forward, but i got us reservations for dinner tomorrow night. nothing fancy or anything, but i’d really like to go on a date with you.”

miles thinks first this is the landing, and second i didn’t think it would be now, and third wait, holy shit, he’s asking me out, and the skydiving has turned into a typhoon but he manages to say “yes, please,” a little strangled but fairly genuine.

jon can tell, judging by the way he’s grinning. “i’ll pick you up at six-thirty?”

“yep, sounds good, as long as i don’t have to wear a suit,” miles says. jon laughs and gives him the name of the restaurant and leaves, but not before squeezing miles’s shoulder, hand lingering just a minute and trailing behind. miles’s shoulder is tingling.

miles is pretty sure that kerry doesn’t appreciate the series of “HOLY SHIT IT HAPPENED” texts that he receives at ass o’clock in the morning, but who fucking cares, he’d do the same for kerry, and besides, kerry is excited when he wakes up and sees them.
