You just had to, didn’t you? Drat. Now I have to think about all of these amazing SR-themed questions.
Welp, here we go!
1. What name do you give your Boss?
I actually just called V ‘Boss’ for a while. Then when I sat down to write Take Two I realized that wouldn’t fly over an extended period of time. Maybe it was just me, but it made sense in SR1 for them to have something the others could call them that wasn’t ‘Playa’.
As for why I call them V? That’s a secret I might eventually reveal, but not now. Let’s just say that I got lucky in my planning.
2. What is your favorite headcanon about the Boss
I don’t know if it’s a headcanon since I based it off of things I saw in-game, but that the boss is a massive dork. Whether it be random references or actions, V’s got a slew of things that she either says or does that stamps the word right on her forehead.
She also loves crappy movies. There’s good, there’s bad, and then there’s ‘so bad it’s amazing’. Everyone has suffered through at least one of these movies with her to the point that when she volunteers to pick everyone hesitates.
3. What’s, in your opinion, the best game in the series
…I think I might give it to SR2. It corrects a lot of the errors from the first game (adds more as well, but what game doesn’t), and also keeps most of the cast from the first game, which I also adore. There are plot inconsistencies out the wazoo, and the timeline’s dead to a point that not even a necromancer could raise it, but this is a good game with a balance of zaniness and emotion.
I also love SRIV for remembering things from SR1 and 2, but it’s still missing a few things. (and people) But the things it fixed with the controls are gold. Driving’s a dream now and I love it.
And seeing the boss transition to that stable spot instead of the one that you see in SR2 has been fascinating. It’s hell to write, however.
4. Favorite vehicle
The Emu. I’m not sorry. The Halberd’s a close second, but you can’t go wrong with a Kaneda or Raycaster.
She likes driving ridiculous things. They’re small and fast, and they actually encourage her to drive better because one bad hit’s going to smash it to pieces. …A fact which is invalidated by Johnny’s comment that she could always just armor-plate it, but she does try. Sometimes.
5. Favorite hideout
The University’s hideout was cool, but the lighthouse by the prison? Best and worst spot for a hideout ever. V’s parties are always bigger over at that spot.
If she’s looking to relax and keep to herself, then her Red Light apartment’s good, because sometimes even she needs space to breathe. Only a few know of that specific location in Stilwater and she tries not to broadcast it.
6. We all have a favorite method of killing—what weapon can’t you live without
The rapid-fire pistols save my bacon every time. Also, the lightsaber.
When that fails? The good ol’ fists do. Fight Club in SR2 was so much with this, especially with the different fighting styles. I picked the Ronin one at first, but I think the Brotherhood fighting style’s won my favor.
7. Who’s your favorite Homie?
Johnny. Then I call Troy and it’s a party. I can’t take either of them anywhere.
There’s nothing quite like watching your co-op partner run off into the distance with Johnny while you’re left behind making sure that Troy isn’t going to get abandoned by a brisk jog. Damn cop run.
8. Pick a favorite villain
Maero. He and the Boss brought out the absolute worst in each other, and seeing things escalate like that is a trial. It didn’t have to happen that way, but that was the way it did.
9. Lets get real, who do you ship the Boss with
Real, eh?
I’m going to share a secret, meme. Back when I was playing through SR:tT I didn’t actually have much of a ship to work with. I actually shipped Boss/Pierce a bit. Then I started reading fic and playing through the others and that initial opinion got blown up (still like Boss/Pierce, though).
Boss/Johnny’s the first ship I really liked, because that dedication to the other platonic or not is amazing. They will do anything for the other and SRIV made me love it even more, because the Boss is hopeless for this guy. Put both in a room and see how long it’ll take before something inane and full of property damage’s going down, because it’s going to be quick, and they’ll both be grinning too.
Boss/Troy was intentional, but accidental only because I didn’t expect to ship it this damn hard. I toyed around with the idea back when I was waiting for IV to come out, because apparently all you have to do to make me like a character is actually include them in your story (and write them well), and when doublehamburgerjack released her Boss meme, I considered them as a possible pair. That was before writing anything for this fandom.
Then I did some planning, wrote a little out for Take Two, and…it got worse. Then I did those one-shots to develop things more, and…it got even worse than that. They’re two people that shouldn’t work, let along work together. Too much history, questions about trust, and all that lovely stuff, but the Boss can still get his number, and this is after he has fight an uphill battle to keep you breathing. Then there’s that damn wiretap where he was trying to get Julius to get the Boss and Johnny to stand down, and even back then he was keeping an eye out for them. It’s a weird situation that only got more and more complicated once he and Julius saved the Boss from that initial shootout, and I’m way too invested in them now not to continue this exploration.
So, they’re another pair that I feel has a lot of unspoken dedication to the other once they’re able to get around the large glaring obstacles that are their occupations.
And there’s more that I could probably answer, but I’ll leave it there. /novel
10. Favorite NPC ship
Johnny/Aisha. They’re matched, but mismatched, and even after all the outrageous events that span the games you can still see how much they love each other.
It does break my heart, though, because you can see the mistakes leading up to the end. Zinyak makes Johnny live through that experience for years after the fact.
11. In Saints Row: The Third which ending did you choose
Save Shaundi! There’s no way I wouldn’t save her, Viola, or Burt.
Even if kicking Killbane’s ass was amazing. I like to think that that exact thing happens later, but we’ll see.
12. Describe your Boss in three sentences
She does her best to do right by people even if she doesn’t always do right. She’s going to make mistakes, fuck everything up well and good, but she will do everything in her power to fix that, because she wants to earn the faith that people keep placing in her. And chances are if she’s loyal to you, you’ve earned it too.
13. What’s your jam? Favorite song featured in the games?
My jam really is obnoxious techno with an excellent beat. A lot of the dubstep that they chose to include in IV was great, but going back and playing 1 and 2 reminded me of a lot of great alt rock and classic tunes that I also do not mind playing at all.
V also loves the classics or K12. The Rock was probably her favorite station, however, and that didn’t exactly survive the five year skip.
Favorite songs include Make Damn Sure by Taking Back Sunday, Hole in the Earth by The Deftones, Bound for the Floor by Local H, Take on Me by A-ha, Insane in the Brain by Cypress Hill, and Everybody Wants to Rule the World by Tears for Fears. There’s more, but those are the ones that are hitting me right now.
14. Describe in detail the Boss’s relationship with your favorite NPC
V had to earn Johnny’s time at first. She ‘didn’t look like much’, but once she went charging into Green’s to rescue him he couldn’t see her the same. Add to that her tendency to be a bit of an adrenaline junkie, and they were pulling stupid shit in no time. It got to the point that Gat was the constant in her life, and there was nothing that she would do without Johnny.
Troy was her lifeline when she started. He might not have intended for it to be this way, but he kept an eye out for her and anything he said she believed without hesitation. He gave her the stability she wanted and needed, and she knew without a fact that if he told her he’d be there, he’d be there. That made the truth that much harder to swallow, but even after that he still kept his word. That meant more to her than she’d ever admit.
15. Describe in detail the Boss’s relationship with your least favorite NPC
I like all the characters, but let’s aim for someone that hurts.
Like, Julius. When V met him she wasn’t sure if she’d ever contribute anything of worth. It wasn’t expected of her, so she stopped caring. Julius made her care again and every action that she took had an impact worth mentioning. It made her want to do anything for him.
Then he changed his mind. Decided that the girl he’d saved was better off being removed. That broke her trust in an entirely different way and she let her anger do the talking.
16. Name a ship you absolutely fucking hate
I don’t hate any ships, though I do shy away from the other gang leaders/Boss pairings.
But even so I feel inclined to make an “EXTREME TRAINING” crack. Hmm…
17. Saddest character death?
Aisha, Carlos, and Lin were three deaths that didn’t have to happen and all three hurt. Carlos and Aisha almost hurt more, however, because you’re part of the reason (if not entirely) that they’re gone.
18. Do you have a headcanon about Johnny Gat?
He puts up the Boss’s fame game for a while, but can’t relax. It’s something that he tolerates and even has fun with, but they’re not celebrities. They’re heads of a gang and still human. Doesn’t take much to hurt that.
19. Is your Boss a sociopath or simply a misunderstood puckish rogue?
I believe my opinion on this (for V, at least) is summed up good with a line from FV1 in SRIV: “It’s not really sociopathic if they’re shooting at you first.”
She does it initially because it’s expected of her, and later because she’s good at it. There’s never a case where she’ll kill indiscriminately, but she sure does love making certain people pay.
