IN THE CROSSWIND / RISTTUULES (2014) dir. Martti Helde
Those days haunt me. The days before they took us away. Those last days in our homeland. I'm haunted by that decision that I made on behalf of the rest of our family. It seems that the years have taken everything else with them... I still think of those letters we sent to our relatives. I'm looking at our free wild apple tree now. The hay around it is chest-high. Its branches no longer look towards the sky. Instead they droop towards the ground. Does it long to enter the soil where its roots are hidden or does it still hope to burst into bloom? If people look like their choices then tell me, Heldur, who do I look like, that I took the two of you the chance to see those blossoms once again? Who do I look like that I thought it was right not to flee across the sea. The courage to believe that we wouldn't be taken away... The courage to stay home. The loveliest years of my life passed as if standing still. Regretting that we didn't flee when we had the chance, holding all our lives to ransom.

↳ “Risttuules” 2014 (In the Crosswind)
“Risttuules” is Estonian drama film about the mass deportation of Estonians to Siberia by Soviet Russia in June 1941 and is based on real-life diaries, pictures, letters and drawings from the period. The movie centres around the story of Erna and her family during the course of 12 years.
"How to survive hunger, cold, humiliation, losing friends and freedom, but still keep living on, when almost all hope is lost?"
Throughout the movie, the emphasis is on time being frozen, from which the audiovisual solution (so-called tableau vivant) was born: the atmosphere of the time was recreated from the pictures, however, both actors and extras are frozen, so the “3-dimensional pictures” receive a substantive dimension from the actors dialogue, sound design and music.
The actors in the movie were Laura Peterson (as Erna), Tarmo Song (as Heldur), Mirt Preegel (as Eliide), Ingrid Isotamm (as Hermiine) and Einar Hillep (as chairman of kolkhoz).

Ülkelere, bayraklara, devletlere, politikacılara, marşlara, tarih kitaplarına, pasaportlara, hudutlara, hava-deniz-kara sahalarına, evlilik cüzdanına, tapulara, ordu komutanlarına, gazete haberlerine, merkez bankasına, kartvizitlere, futbol takımlarına, bağımsızlığa, fetihlere, kahramanlıklara, hesap cüzdanlarına, demokratik seçimlere, beyaz saraya, batı medeniyetine, siyasi partilere, sloganlara ve insanlığa inanmıyorum!
Akıl sağlığımı koruyabilmek için, delirmemek için, elimden bir şey gelmeyecek acılarda, takılıp merhem olabileceğim bir yarayı kaçırmamak için, okuduğum bir gazetede haberinin bendeki etkisi günlerce geçmediği için olan bitene kulaklarımı biraz tıkamaya çalışıyorum.
Ama kaçamayız, kaçamıyoruz, kaçamıyorum... Amacım kaçmak değil, aklımı korumak. Olan oluyor, insanlar biz görmesek de ölüyor. Anneler ağlıyor. Analar hep ağlıyor...

Söylesene Heldur... Kocasını kaybeden kadına,dul denir. Anne babasını kaybeden çocuğa,yetim denir. Peki çocuğunu kaybeden anneye ne denir? Bu hissi,anlatmaya kelimeler yetmez. Hava çok kasvetli. Güneş bulutların arkasında... Daha da yürüyecek çok yolum var. Adımlarım daima yerlilerin ağaç soydukları yere doğru gidiyor. Böylelikle ağacın beyaz gövdesi,kara oluyor. O kadar kara ağaçlar nasıl oluyor da büyüyor... Toprak bereketli de ondan. Hermiine,bundan böyle tek başıma ormana gitmemem gerektiğini söyledi. İnandığı ve sevdiği her şey elinden alınan birisi başka nereye gidebilir ki?
