We are very pleased to announce the Soundlands webinar Sound, Space and Sub-Saharan Africa. Click here to register for this FREE online event.

Often interdisciplinary, sound art offers new ways of working. This webinar will:

- take a critical look at sound art with artist and writer, Dr Jane Grant

- present a field study of sound in Sub-Saharan Africa (SSA) with Ghanian DJ and musician, Rita Ray

- showcase a number of live performances by musicians and sound artists from Ghana, Kenya and South Africa, featuring original compositions based on recent micro-commissions

break-out session and Q&A panel discussion

Rita Ray returns with a heart-melting ode to love in new single ‘No Greater Love’

Estonian soulstress Rita Ray returns with ‘No Greater Love’, the second single off her upcoming album. It is a wholesome ode to love, pure and untainted. If Rita Ray’s previous creations have been hinting heart-ache, then this is the first song with an aura of contentment. It is a clear, flawless expression of the blinding admiration a young heart feels towards a freshly found beloved.

Rita Ray continues to explore cinematic and symphonic soundscapes in her creation. ‘No Greater Love’, as well as the whole album exhibits string arrangements, performed by the Pärnu City Orchestra and arranged by the artist herself. Boundaries have been pushed further than ever not only in terms of arrangements, but also production, done in tandem with the Solid Gold Sound production team.  

“I started listening to orchestral music before I began writing the second album and totally fell in love with the magic of arranging, which has become one of my secret hobbies. My hope is that the orchestra brings the emotions, environment and message of the songs closer to the listener,” says Rita Ray.

Mwalimu Express presented by Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt (17/01/2021)

Mwalimu Express was created in 1997 by DJs Rita Ray and Max Reinhardt. Envisioned as a mythical train travelling the African continent, the original weekly sessions were based at the Bread and Roses pub in Clapham, blending live music, DJs, food and even board games.

In 2000 they introduced a film programme, curated by the ScreenStation Collective, showcasing a mix of short films, documentaries and features. Now held at Rich Mix on the third Sunday of every month from September to May, Mwalimu Express has built a loyal following of all ages and includes dance workshops, market stalls, street food, bar and a pop-up library.
