for the "which was THAT SCENE for this fic" ask thing: flew like a moth to you, sunlight ?
haha the entire fic tbh. i just really wanted to write miles being dumb and willfully misinterpreting absolutely everything in an effort to maintain his whole “OBVIOUSLY i am unrequited pining” thing. but if i had to pick just one scene, it would be this one:
“Mr. Edgeworth,” said Iris a little unsteadily when Miles told her what he was working towards, “I—please don’t think I don’t appreciate what you’re attempting to do here, but—”
“Do you have feelings for Phoenix Wright?” said Miles bluntly.
Iris turned a delicate shade of pink, casting her eyes down at the table. “I-I—”
That was answer enough for Miles. “He is painfully in love and it is impeding his ability to function properly in the courtroom,” he said impatiently. “I feel that securing your early release may make him happy in the way he deserves to be.”
“W-well, yes! I-I do know that Phoenix’s feelings run very deeply,” said Iris earnestly, looking back up with mingled confusion and appreciation. “And he is very lucky to have your steadfast support, Mr. Edgeworth, e-especially in matters of the heart, but—” She chewed on her lip, surveying Miles with a searching expression. “You do understand who Feenie’s in love with, don’t you?”
“You would have to be a complete idiot not to,” said Miles bitterly, unable to understand the horrible, cloying feeling in his chest. This was what Phoenix wanted, he reminded himself. You’re only unhappy because your friend is unhappy, and when Phoenix and Iris are properly happy, then you can be happy. “I want nothing more than—than Phoenix Wright’s eternal and everlasting happiness.”
“Th-that’s very…” Iris trailed off, smiling almost sadly. “Noble,” she said. “But then—I suppose that your feelings for Feenie aren’t what he wants them to be?”
The horrible feeling in his chest intensified. “That’s a very personal question, Miss Hawthorne,” said Miles a little too sharply.
i have a deep and abiding love for iris hawthorne, and had a particular amount of fun writing this conversation between her and miles specifically because it is so goddamn funny to imagine them both being like “wow. this is the person that phoenix wright is in love with. i understand this situation completely and am missing no important information.”
though of course i would be remiss if i didn’t also include this little bit:
“Let’s go,” said Miles, tugging Phoenix through the door with what was perhaps rather unnecessary violence. I AM VERY HAPPY, he told himself as loudly as he could without saying anything at all, shoving Phoenix down the stairs and towards the car he had left running outside. THIS IS A VERY HAPPY DAY FOR ALL PARTIES INVOLVED.
