Day five: matching

This is an electrical box near my house painted on all sides by a local elementary school with images of our local wildlife. The swans on side one look good; the groundhog on side two is definitely referencing a bidoof; whoever painted the fox on side three really lies manned foxes; and then there’s this creature. Context-wise, I know it’s supposed to be a blue heron. Anatomically it’s just… not. I love this creature so much! Perfectly and lovingly wonky. My partner and I have named it the River Emu.

A few years ago my partner commissioned this plush so the River Emu could also live at our house. As you can see, the original and the effigy get along swimmingly

Random story time!

In my city all the electrical boxes get painted periodically by various local artists/school groups, and near my house there’s one that was painted by a middle school art class to reflect local wildlife. The anatomy is kind of off on all the animals, but in a way that is deeply endearing to me. And the one that is most off, and thus most endearing is the blue heron

This is not what a blue heron looks like. My partner and I affectionately call this bird a river emu, as its anatomy is much closer to a flightless giant. In any case, this is my mascot and I love them.

So for Christmas one year, my partner got random people on the RPG.net forums to draw their version of river emu, and sent that to a custom plush company, and now I have a river emu that lives at my home!

In conclusion custom toys are the best and I’m just now realizing I should make river emu some fun accessories.

Make art! It’s the best! And sometimes you can cuddle it!
