#OTD in 1650 – Kilkenny surrendered to Oliver Cromwell.
The success of Oliver Cromwell’s Irish campaign during the autumn of 1649 caused further divisions in the Marquis of Ormond’s Royalist-Confederate coalition. With the defeat of British and Scottish forces in Ulster and the defection of most of Lord Inchiquin’s Protestant troops to the Parliamentarians, Ormond was obliged to rely increasingly upon Catholic support. Early in December 1649, the…

Had a lovely day benchmark hunting in Inistioge yesterday. I took the Kilbride coach, walked up the hill beyond Woodstock Gardens and down again. I found four of them, not too bad at all. Arrived back in the village an hour before the bus back arrived, but no pub was open, so I had to sit in St. Columcille's Church to work on my radio piece about benchmarks. It was quite cool outside and okay for walking, but not sitting. Thomastown will be next.

I went on a boat trip on the River Nore with a friend today. I got a “Local Expert pass” two weeks ago from Fáilte Ireland to explore Kilkenny’s tourist attractions for free. Most of it I had done already, but the boat tour on the Nore is new. It’s €8 per person and takes about 20 mins going up and down the Nore. The guides adapt the tour to the audience. I had taken an archaeologist friend with me and the driver was an archaeologist, too, so they had to catch up about common friends first - typical Irish thing to do. He didn’t get a chance to talk about Kilkenny’s history, so I can’t tell if that is worth it. Anyway, you get some interesting new views on to Kilkenny. 20 mins is quite short, but they do a tour on the River Barrow, which lasts an hour. I’d prefer that, to be honest. But it was nice anyway.
