These paunchy fellows are Asian giant toads [Phrynoidis asper], a species native to mainland Southeast Asia and the greater Sunda Islands. Despite the name these toads are only considered a medium-sized species, with females reaching a maximum snout-to-rump length of 5.5 inches. These toads are often found in or around streams, and live nocturnal lifestyles. Images by Vince Adam.

Phrynoidis asper, or the Asian giant toad, is a species of true toad capable of reaching 5.5 inches in length. These Southeast Asian natives live near streams and rivers, often hiding under submerged stones throughout the day. River Toad  (Rough Toad, Giant Asian Toad, Kodok Buduk Sungal, Kodok Puru Besar)

Bufo asper, Syn. Phrynoidis aspera (Bufonidae), is an Asian toad with large and stout body (100-140mm snout-vent length). The skin is covered with warts or tubercles; so the name of this species derives from its rough skin texture.

This species occurs in Brunei Darussalam; Indonesia, Malaysia, Myanmar and Thailand. It is consumed for food in Sabah and peninsular Malaysia .
