Day 3 of this week's #IGtakeover by @ronhaviv_vii for @amazonaid Gold miners work in the mining area of Lamal. The mine is less then one month old and is as large as a football field, felling trees and changing the natural habitat. Miners work 24 hours a day on a pit like this and if you go 40 meters beyond that, there's another one like it. Mines like this have sprung up everywhere along the river. Pleased to be highlighting issues with illegal gold mining that affect us all. @ronhaviv_vii for @amazonaid. A gold miner stands in a barrel filled with mercury in order to separate the gold from the excavation matter, in the mining area of Lamal, Madre de Dios region, Peru. The miners mix the excavation matter with mercury to form an amalgam, which they commonly tramp on with bare feet in a barrel. They destroyed much of the mining infrastructure in the mining regions outside Puerto Maldonado including trucks, sluices, and houses.
