Story - summarized

On the first day of high school, Chi Xiaolong already has to deal with bullies. They try to beat him and his goldfish up - Tang Hupo appears and scares off the bullies. She makes sure that Xiaolong is alright, too, and they walk home together.

The goldfish Chi Xiaolong had is meant for a design project, but he decides that he'll keep working on the fish-inspired dress and give it to Hupo later.

Throughout high school, the two become close friends. Xiaolong's crush deepens, but he is too nervous to share his feelings. It gets even harder when he learns that Tang Hupo wants to study at a military academy in North. If she goes, he won't see her again for a long time.

During their last year, Hupo asks for help talking to another boy in Xiaolong's class, who goes by the nickname "Qin Yi the II" because of his handsomeness. However, when he learns that Hupo likes him, he rejects her. Xiaolong does his best to cheer up Hupo, even getting her favorite boba drink for her.

It's a good thing Hupo didn't end up with Qin Yi the II, because that boy meets up with a couple of the school bullies to smoke in school. This sets off the fire alarm, and Xiaolong rushes to find Hupo before it's too late.

She's alright, just hurt during the commotion. Finally, Xiaolong asks Hupo to go with him to see the fireworks during the graduation trip. She accepts.

Connections

-Chi Xiaolong and Xiaoyu both have Reflections based after goldfish. Xiaoyu's memories in Floating Silk reveal her meeting with the goldfish god of Nanchi.

-During the Nighttime Fireworks event, you, Nikki, Momo, and Chi Xiaoyu try to help Xiaolong woo Tang Hupo. When they all get drinks, he remembers her favorite drink, milk tea with normal sugar, coconut jelly, boba, pudding, and taro. Sure enough, it impresses her at the fireworks show.

-The graduation trip to see the fireworks show takes place in Zither River. The first time we visit Zither River is during the Zither River Night hell event, where we meet up with Loen and learn his story for Flame Fox.

-"Qin Yi the II" meets his fate for turning down Hupo. The very last episode during the Nighttime Fireworks event shows the graduates taking photos with each other, and he tries to get a picture alone with her - however, she chooses Xiaolong.

Fun Facts

-Goldfish are symbolic of good fortune, beauty, and prosperity. They were domesticated during the Tang dynasty (618-907 AD). (Hupo's family name being Tang is most likely a coincidence, but it's still an interesting reference.)

-Xiaolong and Xiaoyu sometimes call each other cousins, and sometimes they're brother and sister. I'm not sure which familial tie they have.
