Snap, Keisha! Sorrowland just jumped up on our #TBR list!!!!! We loved An Kindness of Ghosts by @RiversSolomon. Have you heard of Rivers Solomon before Keisha's post? If so, what books have you read by them? Reposted @keishasliterarylabyrinth This book right here🤩😍🤩😍 Summary: Vern―seven months pregnant and desperate to escape the strict religious compound where she was raised―flees for the shelter of the woods. There, she gives birth to twins, and plans to raise them far from the influence of the outside world. THOUGHTS: love the structure of Sorrowland. The chapters run into one another, offering the reader little reprieve. In fact, the breaths you're allowed to take in Sorrowland are ones intentionally placed by Solomon...and even those are few and far between.They really do play with pacing and shock value in this novel and I enjoyed it very much. (I say this as a beginner in black gothic and horror). While this may sound scary to someone who will be reading Solomon for the first time, I assure you, it's okay. Solomon gives you strength in their very flawed and very combative main character, Vern. Vern is the one person in your squad that thrives on conflict, anger, and inquiry. You need them because they will question everything and everyone to get to the truth, no matter how uncomfortable it makes you.😍 What I love the absolute most is the social commentary.... on everything: Black supremacist values, government testing, race, systemic oppression, treatment of the indigenous, religion, sexuality, gender, etc.. and still made the book obsessively interesting without being preachy. ALL of the trigger warnings are in this book. Alluvem. I bought #TheDeep and #AnUnkindnessofGhosts because of this book. This is officially a #RiversSolomon Stan account. I read my last Solomon's book 😭 I'm glad I saved this one for last - it was a very hard read (like their other works also are, tbf), but this one really dug into its dark themes. We follow Aster, a medic about the HSS Mathilda, a space ship on its way to find Paradise with the last shreds of humanity. The people aboard the ship are separated into strict hierarchal groups, with rich, white people living at the top and using most of the resources, while black people live and work at the bottom. Like the Antebellum South at it's worst. The books doesn't only deal with racism and race - it also deals with religious trauma, neurodivergence (the main character is autistic), generational trauma, queerness, and gender. 💫 I'm gonna leave you with some quotes I couldn't help but underline while reading, cause they were so beautiful: 💫 ""I am a boy and a girl and a witch all wrapped into one very strange, flimsy, indecisive body. Do you think my body couldn’t decide what it wanted to be?” “I think it doesn’t matter because we get to decide what our bodies are or are not,” he answered. (...) “Is that so? Then I am magic. I say it, therefore it is true,” she said."" 💫 "In my language, there is no word for I. To even come close, you must say, E’tesh’lem vereme pri’lus, which means, This one here who is apart from all. It’s the way we say lonely and alone. It’s the way we say outsider. It’s the way we say weak. Everyone always wonders about I love you. In Ifrek you say, Mev o’tem, or, We are together. “How do you say, I’m tired?” people ask. “Ek’erb nal veesh ly. The time for rest is upon us." 💫 "People were so often mean that when they weren’t, there was a tendency to bestow sainthood upon them. Aster did not reward common decency with her affection." So yes. Highly recommend, but keep in mind that this is a dark book! I only had a vague idea of what I was getting into. All I really knew was this was sci fi and had a wide range of diverse representations regarding sexuality, gender, race, and neurodivergence. You know how sometimes you read books that feel almost like the rep is in it just to check a box? Yeah, 100% NOT this book. Every single character and element felt as if they were created effortlessly with important roles to play in this story set on the SS Matilda, a large spaceship (?) in search of a new world. The ships inhabitants, including our main character Aster, are generations removed from having fled earth for reasons that are never entirely clear. What is clear is that humanity has carried on in earnest with enforcement of caste and enslavement, especially as it relates to the color of one’s skin. Aster is a lowerdeck person who has incredible medical knowledge and assists Matilda’s Surgeon General. I want to say here that Aster is consistently referred to as “she” throughout the novel, but Aster makes clear gender is more complex than that, even if society is determined to treat one’s body as “male” or “female.” Listen, there’s a lot to this novel, but reading this as Roe v. Knocking out these audiobooks. Just finished The Deep by Rivers Solomon. This was a quick listen at just 4 hours. The mythos of an entire civilization originating from the pregnant enslaved women who were thrown overboard during the Middle Passage was as engaging as it was heartbreaking. I enjoyed how the novella bounced from Yetu and her struggles as historian for her people back to the origins and previous historians.
