Michael didn’t look much like Jack.
Jack was like their father. Angry, with dark eyes. He told Michael that he was glad he was angry.
Jack was his brother. Sometimes people told Michael that he wasn’t, that Jack was wrong. Michael didn’t like those people. Just because Miss Medda helped Jack be a fella didn’t mean he was wrong.
Michael liked Miss Medda a lot. She let him use the swing, which he enjoyed. Sometimes he let go at the peak and he’d soar through the air. Jack forbade him from doing that after he caught him once. Michael did it anyway.
Michael didn’t look very much like Jack. Michael looked like their mother, with light brown ringlets and gray eyes. He didn’t really remember his mother much-she had died when he was little, and then their father went to jail. Jack and Michael hated jail.
Jack hated mean old Snyder especially. Michael came up with calling him the Spider, and then it caught on. Jack was real proud of Michael for coming up with that.
Michael ate his slice of bread on the corner, savoring every chew. Jack had given him the bigger half of it. He usually did. Michael was happy for a kid in his situation. He did wonder what school and all was like, but Jack and the others taught each other the best they could, so Michael knew some basic math and he was just learning to read the headlines. He could swim too, unlike most other newsies. He was a bit slow on his feet, but he was fine with that.
After all, he was alive.
Jack hadn’t mentioned where he got the bread-Michael suspected he stole it. Their father had always taught them not to starve, which was probably why he ended up in jail.
Jack grinned over at Michael. “Is your bread good? Mine tastes amazing-just melts in your mouth, don’t it?”
Michael nodded, munching on it.
“Thanks, Jack!”
Three years later. Manhattan, 1899.
Jack grinned back. “No problem.”
Les laughed.
