While three weekday ago I loved seeing the happy surprise expressions on my parents' faces, today, to my chagrin, my father hadn't realized we would depart back for the US. Oh, it was painful to see the helpless face; it cut straight to our hearts. Here we are joined by Andri, the eldest son and child of our most senior household staff Umi, who had been with us for 35+ years. Andri and his family would travel to his girlfriend's town to ask for her hand in marriage. Today I got to surprise these three, one by one: I told no one I was going, except for some key people. Last night I arrived after Mom and Dad had retired to their rooms. Only this early morning while Mom was checking her LINE messages, I emerged from my room, sat on the floor by her, and said nothing. She looked at me and her jaw dropped. Strike one. Then my father was wheeled to the dining room, unaware I was there, until by chance he lifted his head and in disbelief he reached for me. Strike two. Saturday brunch, my BFF Gloria came to see my folks at the Vasa Hotel. She approached them with her merry walk until she saw me and laughed hard. She scolded my Mom for keeping that as a secret.
