It wasn’t that you had gotten into something you weren’t ready for. You and Tom had both agreed, the feeling was mutual. It was just a bit of fun. The only problem is, you didn’t want it to be “just fun.”
As you sat backstage, your eyes trained on the screens, your mind raced a million miles an hour. He was laughing at something Zendaya said, reaching over and brushing some hair off her shoulder, teasingly mocking her. It broke your heart.
It was silly, and you knew it. After all, the whole thing was your idea. How were you supposed to know you’d fall in love with him? Because it’s Tom Holland, that’s how, a voice hissed in the back of your mind.
Later that day, the two of your returned to the hotel. Tom was tugging at your sleeve, pressing his lips to yours, and for a moment you let yourself believe that it mattered that you were the one he was kissing.
In the morning, you slipped out before Tom was awake, like you always did. But you didn’t go far. You walked out to the patio area of the hotel, needing some time to clear your head. You clambered up a tree, pushing yourself higher and higher, relishing in the scratch of bark underneath your palms.
You found a fork near the top and sighed, deciding to rest for a bit. You dozed off, and your phone ringing in your pocket woke you up. It was Tom. You answered it immediately, your heart pounding. You couldn’t go on pretending like this.
“Where are you, Mara?”
“Outside. The patio.”
“I’m coming.”
He hung up before you could answer. Minutes later, he arrived in swim trunks and nothing else, looking around in confusion. You pushed yourself upright, calling his name. His eyes widened when he saw you, and you began to climb down. He met you at the base of the tree.
“Don’t you have interviews or something?” you asked as he pressed himself close.
“Not today. Today, it’s all about you, Mara.”
You shut your eyes, loving the goosebumps that went down your arms when he said it. As he leaned in close, however, your mouth spoke without permission. “I love you.”
Tom pulled back, staring at you hard. “What?”
You wanted to touch him, to feel his lips again, but you forced yourself to say strongly, “I love you.”
